The Nigeria Women League chairperson, Dilichukwu Onyedinma has awarded pass mark on the out gone 2012/2013 Nigeria Women Professional League (NWPL)season. The NWPL Matchday 18 matches were played among the various teams on Sunday which ultimately brought to a close the regular season. The last lap of the football season will be the Super Six tournament where the champions will be crowned. The quartet of title holders, Delta Queens, Cup holders, Rivers Angels, Bayelsa Queens and Ibom Angels are sure qualifiers for the Super Six challenge. Onyedinma said the women football season was 100% hitch free as it recorded tremendous improvements compared with previous seasons. "The season ended on a very good note just as it started, no rancour, no litigation, no banishment, no withdrawal, among other things as currently witness in the men's leagues. "We had 100% hitch free season. Winners and losers emerged on the field of play not through the boardroom, I give kudos to every persons who made it possible," said the NFF executive board member to supersport.com. Onyedinma said the board is working very hard to secure sponsors for the league more so as the Women Premier League will debut next season. "Of course, the league is not yet perfect we're still working to further improve it especially in the area of sponsorship. "We're yet to secure a sponsor though there have been interests, we're hoping to commence the Premier League next season with sponsors. "The Premier League will commence with six top teams each from the two groups to form the core of the 12-team league. "The final league table will be published very shortly so that everybody will know her stand as regards to the teams to make up the Premier League teams as well as the final Super Six teams. "We don't have date and venue yet for the Super Six tournament but before the Federation Cup final is played on September 15 those issues would've been sorted out. We usually end the football season with the Super Six tournament," said the women league chairperson. Delta Queens are the reigning Nigeria women champions. © supersport.com 1 Like |

The 2013 Super Six Competition for the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) will not hold due to lack of funds, the league's secretary, Isaac Ajisafe, said on Monday. Ajisafe in Abuja said that the competition would be replaced with a ceremonial match between the top clubs in the league's two groups. The competition normally involves the three top clubs from the two groups of the league and is organised annually by the NWFL. The competition, which is used to round up the women league season, helps in determining the league winners, and it also marks the end of the women football season. The league secretary said that the NWFL board took the decision in view of the limited time available to it and after having waited endlessly for funds to come. "The reason why we have waited till this time is that we were trying to see if we will get funds, but it seems they are not forthcoming. "So, instead of waiting for too long, after having waited this long since July when we finished the league competition, we decided to organise a ceremonial match to decide the league winners. "And it will be between the top club from each of the two groups," Ajisafe said. He noted that the date for the match had not been decided but that it would be part of the programme of the league's Annual General Meeting (AGM). "Presently, we cannot give a date for the match because we want it to be part of our AGM programme to mark the end of the 2012/2013 season. "And we do not have a date for our AGM yet, because it has to be after the Annual General Assembly (AGA) of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA). "That is where they (the NFA Congress) will approve the date we will be proposing to them. We will know when the match will hold then," Ajisafe said. Nasarawa Amazons of Lafia won the league's Group A with 33 points while Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt finished first in Group B with 37 points. Both teams will now meet in the ceremonial match to decide the 2012/2013 league winners. (NAN) |

A brace from Asisat Oshoala and Ngozi Ebere secured Rivers Angels the league title with Ifeoma Amos getting the consolation goal at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. Edwin Okon's ladies overcame fatigue following their Federation Cup win to silence their hosts in the four-goal thriller. Oshoala bagged her double in the first half before Amos pulled one back for the hosts. In the second half, Ebere's strike for Rivers Angels put the game out of reach for Edo Queens as they laboured to contain the attacking forays of the visitors. The league trophy is Rivers Angels’ first in four years and third since inception of the competition in 1990 with runners up Pelican Stars the most winners on seven occasions, followed by Delta Queens who won five times. Sunshine Queens and Osun Babes finished third and fourth with 33 and 32 points respectively, while Confluence Queens and Nasarawa Amazons came fifth and sixth with 31 and 30 points apiece. In seventh and eighth spots were Ibom Angels and Taraba Queens with 27 and 24 points respectively, while Delta Queens and Bayelsa finished ninth and tenth with 21 and 20 points each. Meanwhile, FC Robo, COD Queens, State House of Abuja and Martin White Dove have gained promotion to the elite division. |
