BACKGOUND TO MOBILE COMMUNICATION IN NIGERIA
For any business to thrive, I sincerely believe that an in-depth knowledge of that business is very important. Knowing the genesis, exodus and revelation of the business will be a key to the success of the business.

Therefore, it is important that this topic, "Background to Mobile Communication in Nigeria" be treated. This topic will definately launch us into the main discuss.

Before the early nineties, in Nigeria, the only type of telephone service available was the cable-analogue land line, which had a ratio of one line to about two hundred thousand people. And with a population of about 80,000,000 people, your guess, about how hectic it would have been, then, is as good as mine.

By the early 1990s, the then military government decided to introduce a mobile system of communication, which allowed subscribers to make voice calls while on the move. But the type of mobile telephony introduced then was far from the ideal.

At that time, the Europeans where already experimenting with the Digital Mobile system. This system was, later, to give way to the Global System for Mobile telephone (GSM). But, here in Nigeria, the analogue system, otherwise known as 1st Generation of Mobile telephone, was been deployed by the state owned telecommunication outfit, NITEL. Aside from its inefficiency, it was very expensive to acquire with a long waiting time of aquisition of, at times, up to 3 months.

To be continued next week.
