"Sixty years ago, most South Koreans were illiterate; today, South Korean 15-year-olds rank No. 2 in the world in reading, behind Shanghai. The country now has a 93% high-school graduation rate, compared with 77% in the U.S."

Amazing stuff.

Naija will only get there when the electorate rate politicians on performance instead of tribalism or religion.

Nigeria spends 700bn Naira on education and health, human capital, whilst spending 1 trillion Naira on subsidising fuel consumption. Therefore, in the minds of Nigerians, cheap fuel is 43% more important than education and health put together.

Blame shifting, if our refineries were working we wouldn't be subsidizing

Joe Studwell wrote an interesting book, How Asia Works, which analyses the transformation of the Asian Tigers - Singapore, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan - from economic backwaters to developed nations status.

What's interesting about the policies adopted by these countries is an industrial policy based on export discipline. Firms were given state support in the form of loans provided they could prove themselves globally competitive. If a firm couldn't export its way to success, state aid was cut off.

I am sure we started subsidising in the 70s, at a time when the refineries were working. We managed pretty well in the 60s and up to the early 70s without subsidies, whilst improving living standards despite enduring a civil war.

As with all state managed enterprises, mismanagement took its toll on the refineries especially as the business case for running refineries eroded: why set up refineries in Nigeria if the Govt fixes the price of fuel by fiat?

Tribalism is a perfectly rational choice for our political leaders. ACN or APGA can solidify their hold on power by simply portraying critics as ethnic hate mongers or enablers of tribal disunity.

ermmm...does that mean literacy does not necessarily translate to development or economic wellbeing?

Precisely what I said about tribalism being a rational choice for politicians. The problem with Zimbabwe is an 89 year old who does not want to give up power despite being in office since 1980. To distract people from his shortcomings, all he does is whip up sentiments, Africans are big on sentiment, about the country being engaged in a titanic battle with white imperialists and their agents.

Zimbabwe, like Namibia and South Africa, had higher than average literacy rates under White minority rule. These countries had a level of economic sophistication that most African countries don't have.

... because the tribal fight is what defines us.
We won't progress as we want unless we go our separate ways or go completely regional with full autonomy.
The next 2 generations will still be weeping inside.

There can't be two captains on the same boat. This, indeed, is a fact.

America would not have developed if Whites and Blacks have near equal populations with constant Zimmerman/Trayvon disputes.
One group would neutralize the other just to make a point and there won't be progress.

South Korea wouldn't have developed if they are not nearly homogeneous.

Same with Nigeria, with Yoruba and Igbo population nearly the same, and with constant antagonism, envy, jealousy, etc, we will not move forward. A country with 2 or more nearly equal groups is VERY unhealthy for development.
The earlier we realize this the better. It seems we love carousel.

You don't need to, it's a fact but we cannot change who we are. That does not mean others should start harming us just because we are proud of who we are.

True but it shouldn't be excessive cos we know how many lives hatred from the middle east has cost American and how many lives it has cost us up north.

Actually, it's blatant fact. Zimbabwe under white minority rule was the envy of Africa and the food basket of the continent. Mugabe while initially riding on a wave of support against the imperialist agenda has totally wrecked the country.
Re: Sixty Years Ago, Most South Koreans Were Illiterate; Today.... by PapaBrowne(m): 3:48am On Aug 04, 2013
While literacy is a strong factor in development, it is not an absolute.

There are many other countries that have been literate since world war 2 and yet have not made much improvements despite not having any anti-imperial sentiments.

Culture and Character are the extra ingredients required for the success of nations.

We as Nigerians have some characteristic elements that would lead to extraordinary sucess as a nation, but our culture is our biggest detriment. A culture of nepotism, tribalism, sectionalism and individualism. All these are the biggest factors preventing our success as a nation.

When these things are out of the way, our unique determination to succeed, our self confidence and our global dominance perspective would definitely see us surpassing many of these nations.

Now, while literacy is essential to our development, you would agree with me that the literate amongst us have not been able to show themselves capable of advancement. Nairaland is a forum with 100% literacy rate, however it is still peopled by some of the most debased, anti progressive set of humans who live by tribalism and nepotism.
