Cheap Second Hand Novels!!! (plus Summaries, Excerpts And All) by toluernanes: 9:58am On Aug 08, 2013
I've been meaning to do this for a while but i've not really had the chance to but seeing a bit of an opening, i might as well kick off now. I don't know how much of a reading culture we still have in Nigeria but I guess i'm just trying to do my bit to help improve it by making good second hand novels available for cheap. Now, not only will i be sharing what novels I have in stock but, having read through pretty much all of them (yes, I am THAT kind of reader!), I will include details about the book, a short review by me and my favourite excerpts. I'll post all of them on my blog too, with cover photos of the books (and maybe links to where they can be bought brand new online, if available).

What this basically means is that you won't have to take the trip all the way to the bridge at Ojuelegba (for those familiar with Lagos!) only to start riffling through heaps and stacks of books to realize at the end of the day that you can't find what you like. The books i'm offering are all in good condition (and, in situations where they are in less than good condition, I will state appropriately) and, no, i won't be selling rat chewed books!!!

The offer is only available to those resident in Lagos, for now, as delivery outside Lagos is not currently viable but, God willing, i'll try to expand my scope wider with this.

Of course, there is also a special offer available. I will be listing some books as free books. What this means is that for anyone who makes a purchase of five books, they get one free book which they can choose from any of the free books!

I also intend to start a novel exchange program where you guys can, instead of having to buy a book, exchange it for one you already have but that is still in the pipeline! It would also enable exchanges of books between other board members with me just acting as a go-between.

Interested buyers can call me up on 08165193302 or you can email me at theflurrypages@gmail.com

So that's it. I don't know if I pitched this perfectly, but let's get started!!!

Book Title : Citizen Girl

Authors: Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus

Other book(s) by authors: The Nanny Diaries

Genre: Social Satire

Type: Paper Back

Published: 2004

Description: Citizen Girl is a social satire that covers the life of Girl, a young woman looking to build a career in Manhattan. After losing her job right at the first chapter of the book, we're taken through a very funny roller coaster of what becomes her personal and professional life as she battles between staying through to the values she was brought up with and losing herself to the maelstrom that is career progression culminating in a final decision point for her where she has to choose between staying to true to herself or becoming what she is trying to fight.

My review: I loved this book!!! I won't lie, having to let go of this one is one of the hardest things i'll have to do. Of all the books I received in the last order, this was one of the most riveting and I gave up a whole day so I wouldn't miss a beat reading this. Girl reflects just how much everyone of us who has had to climb a corporate/professional ladder has to deal with at one point or another; crazy/manic bosses with unclear instructions expecting us to figure out what they have little prepared us for. The book is a bit of a roller coaster ride, albeit a very funny one and one can't help but feel Girl's pain as she tries to cope in a job that is both a dream and a nightmare. You can't help but love some of the characters; Girl, her mum Grace (who barely features in the book but is still an overwhelmingly present figure as Girl thinks of her and calls her quite a lot), her brother Jack and Seline, Girl's boss' girlfriend (who she initially thought she was rivalling for the job!). There are also characters you'll love to hate like Doris (who fires Girl at the start of the book), Guy, who hires girl and later wants to fire her but can't, Rex, the off center but still dominant figure at My Company where girl works and doesn't bat at firing 144 people at once as far as he doesn't have to do it himself. Then there are those who you aren't quite sure whether to like or hate them; Buster, Girl's rather bumbling boyfriend who keeps picking arguments with her only to try making it up to her later, Julia, the owner of a non-profit organizatin Girl is trying to help get a million dollars but doesn't seem to mind it will be coming from porn money. This book is funny, sharp, intelligent and will make you think and feel.

Oh, and you'll see the words feminist and feminism in this book. A lot. In a funny way though.

Back Cover Summary: "SEEKING: Qualified applicants looking to build their careers on sand. Requirements: A bachelor's degree worth a fraction of the debt you incured. All interested email your integrity to www.mycompany.com""

My favourite excerpts:

"Gyirl! Gyirl!"We both turn as Moldova arrives for the cleaning job I finally finagled with Angel, wearing a skimpy crocheted sweater over her rather large breasts and spandex jeans over her rather small hips.

"Moldova, hi! Guy, this is the young lady I've been telling you about."

"Nice." He circles around Stacey's desk, hand extended. "How's it going?" he asks.

She flashes a pretty smile, barely marred by Easter European dental hygiene, while I check the clock to gauge what kind of teller line I'll be facing. "Did Angel get everthing set up for you all right?" I ask.

"I nyeed to talk the job," she says forcefully to me, still holding Guy's hand and gaze.

"Sure. I'm just leaving, so why don't you walk me out?" I angle around them in the direction of the door.

She twists to face me. "I want work with you. I no clean."

"I'm so sorry, Moldova." I adjust my grip on the bags. "The cleaning position is really all that's available at the moment-"

"Yeah, no, that's great," Guy interrupts. "Girl, take her. I think it's perfect. Opportunity, that's what America's all about!" With a last eyeful of the opportunities in Moldova's sweater, he drops her small hand and turn back to his office.

"Excellent, just excellent," he says. "Thanks for coming. Got time for a bite? I'm starved."

"Yes, me, too, starved." For. A. Job.

"That was great," he says, dialing.

"Thanks, I couldn't be more intrigued by this initiative."

"Great. Let me just grab my coat."

Guy returns to collect me at the reception area, slurping from a coke can and animatedly conveying a pont into his cell. "Well, they're f**king me.....No.....f**king me. Their retention ratio has me grabbing my ankles..." For three avenues I walk beside him, getting a blow by blow on how the next quarter will relate to Guy receiving said f**king-in what positions, with what accoutremens, and wether his mother's going to be involved. He slaps his phone shut, returning it to his corduroy pocket as we cross Ninth Avenue. "So," he says with a grin, "like Italian?"

Warnings: Mild use of strong language, so you should probably not read this to your kids!
