Prince William opened up about fatherhood
to CNN's Max Foster.
by Alison Maxwell, USA TODAY
Prince William chatted with CNN royal
correspondent Max Foster in a taped
interview that aired Monday morning. Foster
conducted the interview less than two
weeks after Prince George was born. Here
are the highlights:
On the feeling he experienced when he
and Duchess Catherine emerged from St.
Mary's Hospital following the birth of
Prince George:
I think more shock and dauntingness is the
feeling I felt. I think I was on such a high
anyway and so was Catherine about George
that we were happy to show him off to
whoever wanted to see him. As any new
parent knows you're only too happy to
show off your new child and proclaim that
he's the best looking or the best anything.
On so swiftly and accurately putting
George's car seat into the car:
Believe me it wasn't my first time and I
know there's been speculation about that. I
had to practice. I was terrified that I was
going to do something or he was going to
fall off or it wouldn't close properly.
On his decision to drive Catherine and
baby George home:
I'm as independent as I want to be and
same as Catherine and Harry. We've all
grown up differently to other generations. I
very much feel if I can do it myself, then I will
do it myself. There are times when you can't
do it yourself or the system takes over or it's
appropriate to do things differently.
On Prince George:
He's a little bit of a rascal. He either reminds
me of my brother or me when I was
younger, I'm not sure. He's doing very well
at the moment. He does like to keep having
his nappy changed. He's growing quite
quickly actually. He's a little fighter. He
wriggles around a lot. He doesn't want to
get his sleep, which is a little bit of a
problem.
On Catherine as a new mom:
She's doing a fantastic job.
On his new life as a father:
For me, Catherine and now little George are
my priorities ... and Lupo (their cocker
spaniel).
On Lupo and the new baby:
He's coping all right, actually. ... As a lot of
people know when you have dogs and you
bring a newborn back they take a little time
to adapt. He's been slobbering all around
the house. He's perfectly happy.
On going back to work:
Well, as a few fathers might know I'm
actually quite looking forward to going back
to work and getting some sleep. I'm just
hoping the first few shifts I go back I don't
have any night jobs.
On his experience this summer:
The last few weeks for me have been a
different emotional experience, something I
never thought I would feel myself. And I
find, again it's only been a short period, but
a lot of things affect me differently now.
