An Arik Air flight with over 100 passengers en route to London Sunday was forced to make an emergency landing in Palmas, Spain, as a woman went into labour and gave birth while the aircraft was airborne.

The pilot was said to have requested the emergency landing on the advice of two doctors who were on board the aircraft and had helped the mother deliver the baby.

When the passenger went into labour, the cabin crew asked that doctors on board the flight to identify themselves. Following the announcement, two of the passengers came forward, saying they were doctors and assisted in the delivery of the baby.

Normally, a source disclosed that in the few instances where women have given birth on board, the aircraft would continue its flight to its final destination. However, the Arik flight was forced to make an emergency landing following the advice of the doctors that the woman was bleeding excessively – she was said to have experienced excessive hemorrhaging, necessitating the emergency landing.

At the time of this report, both mother and child were said to have been stable but were left behind in Palmas for monitoring by medical personnel, while the flight continued on its journey to London.

The airline was trying to ascertain if the woman had presented a false medical report from her doctor on the true duration of her pregnancy or she had gone into premature labour while on board the flight.

Women with full term pregnancies are not allowed to travel by air, according to International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations. As such, intending pregnant passengers are required to present medical reports certifying that they are less than 32 weeks pregnant before they are allowed to fly.

A source said the airline was carrying out a full-scale investigation to ascertain the genuineness of the medical report presented by the woman.
Arik Air’s management said yesterday that if it is discovered that the woman was given a false report to enable her fly, it would file a special complaint against the doctor who had issued the medical report to the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) for endangering her life and that of the baby, as well that of other passengers on board the flight.

This is a very critical issue.
What I wont do for sure is to follow some people to scream FIRST TO COMMENT cos it is way beyond that.
But there are some issues we need to clarify here.
Is this her FIRST time to board a flight?
Is this her FIRST issue?
Didn't she FIRST consult a genuine doctor to know her stipulated time of delivery?

Giving birth to the baby in another country wont change its skin colour. A lizard in Nigeria can never be a crocodile in spain or london. (

Appreciate your country and patronise her people. Lets help make Nigeria great. stop running away.

At the END you will realize that TIME changes THINGS.

Anyway thank God for safe delivery.

Hmmmmm!!! na who fart for this plane? Pilot abeg i wan land jorrr!!!!!!

The woman is really lucky. Travelling at that height with that sort of pressure around you in that vulnerable state is frankly asking for trouble. I hope she makes a full recovery though. Regardless of what might happen/could have happened though, the Child was still born in an Arik aircraft, so he/she is still a full-blooded Nigerian. No dual nationality issues. grin

Nigerians and their attitude of going to abroad to give birth all in the name if acquiring citizenship. What would have happened to her if no doctors were on board.

Thank God there was no death recorded on air during this trip. I am sure it would have been another restless week for the Arik Airline.

I guess it will be Palmas, Spain because the plane was in Spanish airspace at the time of birth.

Even if Palmas issues the baby, birth cert, does that qualify the baby for Spanish citizen and who even wants to be a black spainiard in austerity troubled Espana?

no! Only landed in palmas after the birth.

Very likely the baby was given birth to above the mediterranean sea.

If on the mediterranean sea, place of origin will be on the mediterranean sea.

Ok. Then, the child will still be a Nigerian cheesy
However, the Spanish Civil code states that one can become a Spanish citizen if one's 1st place of residence is Spain.

Generally, one born during an international flight would be deemed to have as country of origin, the country in whose airspace one saw the world. smiley
If they can prove that it was born in Spanish airspace, na Spaniard be that.

Not nigeria but mediterranean sea!

"Under the 1944 Convention on International Civil Aviation, articles 17–21, all aircraft have the nationality of the state in which they are registered, and may not have multiple nationalities. For births, the law of the aircraft's nationality is applicable, and for births that occur in flight while the aircraft is not within the territory of any state, it is the only applicable law. However, if the aircraft is in or flying over the territory of another state, that state may also have concurrent jurisdiction, and the locus in quo principle may apply to the exact position of the aircraft when the birth occurred"

from that wiki paragraph, one can conclude that the baby is a Nigerian (if place of birth was indeed the Mediterranean Sea). However, as Arik uses a Portuguese registered aircraft on its London flights, the child may be a Portuguese citizen (still assuming place of birth was over the Mediterranean Sea)
