It’s so saddening to see Nigeria in its current
state and no one gives a fuss about it. The
recurrent strike actions in the nation should be
put to an abrupt stop, but not without
honouring agreements reached or putting
palliative measures where necessary.
This letter is written in respect of the on-going
Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)
strike. Since the inception of this strike on the
1st of July, 2013, the Nigerian Labour
Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC),
Civil Rights activist and other concerned or
education related Non-Governmental
Organisations (NGOs) have seen nothing
wrong with the strike. Students of public
universities in Nigeria have been home for
months now yet these bodies that claim they
fight for the masses has said or done nothing
about it.
It’s so painful to find out that if this congress’
won’t be the ones at the round table to
negotiate they don’t embark on any strike (we
know what that means!), this is so appalling.
I seriously applaud the NUT and NUPENG that
have promised to join ASUU in this showdown
between them and the Federal Government if
nothing is done on time to put an end to this
strike and also individuals that sued ASUU to
court at least you have done something.
To Prof Wole Soyinka we have always seen
him as a role model, and someone who stood
for the truth, but not until he recently he
started getting involved in some political
issues he shouldn’t have, but this when we
need him the most because he is a friend of
the government, we need him to help us talk to
those at the helm of affairs of the nation that
the rot in the rot in the educational system
from Primary to Tertiary would soon be
irreversible if nothing is done on time, and on-
going strike should be ended soonest.
On a Final note, I would charge the NLC/TUC
to rise up to this call, and prove us wrong that
they are not government dummies since the
last industrial action they embarked upon was
a mess and a total disappointment to the
Nigerian masses.
Crime is on the increase destinies are being
truncated, students are on the streets do we
really have voice in Nigeria?
I would implore all those mentioned in this
letter to reply to this letter via any means or
respond in action.
Concerned Nigerian Student.
