KNOWLEDGE IS POWER
Weight loss is a big challenge for most people especially those with a sedentary life style. About 25 percent of Nigerians are overweight. Weight loss comes with underlying health issues such as infertility, hormonal imbalance and some even chronic ailments. Taking a deeper look into this problem we can see how what we eat and how much we eat lie at the base of most weight issues. When we don’t measure or predetermine how much we eat, we tend to overeat.

KNOW YOUR CALORIES
Today we shall take a look at a few food items and why they cause us to gain weight.
1) Indomie instant noodles are a nationally accepted food item by the children and adults. It contains a lot of 342 calories and is loaded with lots of spices. Most adults consume at least 2 packs at a sitting which comes to 684 calories. The spices stimulate certain enzymes in the body that lead to water retention and weight gain. These same spices are known to cause cravings for more indomie just like nicotine is to a cigarette smoker. This gives us some insight into why we crave them so often.
2) White rice is the 2nd commonest food item in the Nigerian home. One cup of raw white rice contains 693 calories. When we add a tablespoon of regular groundnut oil to make our stew (120 calories) and tomatoes (35 calories) onions (16) salt, spice, and curry (6) (your basic stew size) it all comes to a total of 890 calories.

APPLY PREVENTIVE MEASURES
We can prevent excesses that lead to weight gain by mastering our appetite and cultivating a life of self control. The scriptures say “And put a knife to thy throat if thou be a man given to appetite” – Proverbs 23:2. This plainly shows that it is our responsibility to control our appetite by taking responsibility over ourselves. This means that if you are prone to excessive eating you ought to be extra careful: mortify your tendencies to excesses by denying and restraining yourself. When this is not done, we often reap negative results.
