The Secretary of the Organising Committee of the Nigerian Centenary Charity Ball, Dr. Kingsley Esegbue, has said that Nigerians spend an estimated sum of N250bn on medical tourism in a year.

Esegbue, who said this at a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, also said that the committee was planning to generate about N8bn for medical facilities in the country.

Esegbue, who spoke on behalf of the committee, said that “it is estimated that Nigeria spends N250bn annually on foreign medical care. This is not good for our country.”

He said that the capital flight was unnecessary for a developing country like Nigeria and asked Nigerians to reconsider their love for foreign hospitals at the detriment of Nigeria’s.

He explained that the medical problems that caused these medical flights could be handled in Nigeria if the facilities were put in place and maintained.

While arguing that Nigeria is blessed with enough manpower in the healthcare sector, he said what was required was for the country to build enough facilities to keep the professionals busy.

He said, “Sealing a hole in a child’s heart need not cripple the parents financially or take place in India; replacing a damaged kidney should and can be done within our borders.

“Every breast, cervical or prostate cancer patient should have access to quality care within Nigeria.

“Our neurosurgery units need to serve the Nigerian people; no woman should have her bladder torn giving birth and for victims of cruel acid attacks, re-constructive surgery should be done within our borders.”

He said this was what the Nigerian Centenary Charity Ball hoped to achieve by equipping existing National Referral Centres for heart, kidney diseases, neurosurgery, cancer care and management.

He added that the initiative “intends to galvanise all Nigerians including Nigerians in the Diaspora for a common good, as our collective gift to Nigeria on her years anniversary.

“We will like to emphasise that in organising the Nigerian Charity Ball, we have chosen to be politically blind because what is at state is our health as a people.”

Why won't they when surgeons use lanterns to carry out an operation, you go to the hospital and you are not being treated as a patient but rather 'just another person' with an ailment. You buy drugs, There are 50 patients to one doctor at a time, the nurses themselves now have ego, like you should beg them to save you, it's not your right to live anymore simply because they went to medical school. I wept when I saw a nurse at a very known hospital in Lagos rudely push a sick man. Because he couldn't turn to the other side of the tiny bed(he had paralysis on part of his body-stroke) while calling for help with his pale voice no answer, had to pee on himself, and the ugly mofo nurse roughly pushed him. I had to tongue lash her, angry politely though considering she is like 5 years older, just respect and she never wanted to see me again. Nigeria indeed at 53!

Why won't we?

Our doctors don't carry out any research once they are certified as doctors.

They don't even know when a drug is out of use cos of new findings.

This is were we expected our ''so called'' government to increase the tariff of flying out for medical check-up so as to encourage our own doctors & foreign investors willing to improve the sector. Instead, they focused on tokunbo cars.

No one deserves to be treated like that. Horrible. I'm glad you stood up for the man. I would've done the same. I would not stand there and watch someone be mistreated like that ...especially a sick, helpless person. sad

All our governors with the minister of health should bow their heads in shame. Some few weeks ago, one of the southwest leaders just came in from one of their funny health trips. When he was the governor, he wasn't able to build a single hospital in his state but yet can afford to buy a jet. Nigeria leaders are very local! I can't imagine American or British politicians coming to Nigeria to receive their treatments. Ojukwu that critizied the British Army for supplying arms to the Nigeria government during Biafra end up dying in a British hospital. A man everybody knows that was totally against the British interest in our country...Is like taking Fidel Castro to America for treatment. Till now, I keep wondering if he wasn't assassinated by the British...It's possible. Nigeria leaders should wakeup. All these jungle fever lifestyle will take us nowhere.

Nigerians will keep spending money on health/medical tourism, until our leaders and politicians have enough confidence in the clinics they keep opening that the call hospitals, and start making it mandatory for all political class to receive treatments, medical check ups, operations etc etc, from this facilities.
They have no confidence in this facilities or this facilities are only befitting, for the common- man !!!

Nigerian medical professionals are so clueless and vision-less. What stops hundreds of doctors from coming together, pool resources and expertise and found world class hospitals that will meet the needs of any medical specialty needed by patients in Nigeria? Must they wait for the government to do everything considering that the government is peopled by just as clueless folks as the average Nigerian? The best hospitals in the world are partnerships from as many as 500 doctors (Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, MD Anderson etc)

All our own doctors know how to do is jostle for civil service health jobs and going on strike over poor conditions. There are several other professionals in Nigeria e.g lawyers, accountants, estate surveyors etc and what they do is found partnerships / firms that can compete with multinationals e.g Akintola Williams & Co (Accounting) FRA Williams & Co (Law) Diya Fatilimilehin & Co (Estate Agency). These professionals have Nigeria's market on lock-down and we don't need to travel abroad for foreign expertise. Why cant our doctors do the same?

One the the best hospitals in Nigeria is Eko Hospital. It was a partnership founded by Dr. Eneli, Dr. Kuku and Dr. Obiora. Our Banks came together and today have the local market on lock-down. Do bankers have 2 heads or it is cheaper to establish a bank than a world class hospital? A world class hospital in Nigeria will break even in its first year of operation.

Our people go to India for medical expertise in private hospitals set up by average Indian doctors who earn the equivalent of 65 thousand Naira per month. Our own medical professionals for all they earn cannot replicate same. If bankers, Lawyers, Accountants and other professionals in Nigeria can thrive without government intervention and can compete with foreign multinationals in the same market, Nigerians have no business going abroad for medical care.

We didn't need government run law firms, accounting firms, banks for these professionals to take the bull by the horns and thrive in their own country. We don't need any government intervention in health care for it to thrive. We only need entrepreneurial medical professionals to set up world class hospitals. The market is already there.
