Of course the mitochondria being referred to is that of the host cell, not the virus. Like all obligate parasites, the HIV needs a living cell (esp the CD4) to exist and reproduce, and so once that host is destroyed - or rather destroys itself via apoptosis, the virus dies off.

Metronidazole is not an antifungal drug. Its more of antiprotozoan/antibacterial. Furthermore, I can't really think of any viral infection metronidazole treats.

Good question. Its perhaps hoped that given its proven invitro activities, a systemic preparation could be made. Another possibility is to utilize it topically to prevent transmission during sex.

The drug simply attacks and destroy the host cell aka mitochondria to which the parasite HIV attaches itself to, once the host cell is destroyed, the HIV cells will die naturally and be eliminated just like what happen in any parasite relationship, when the underlying host is gone!

And can you quote where I said Pharmacology (part of biomedical science) is a field in Pharmacy? I was talking of this very school (Rutgers, The State University Of New Jersey in New Brunswick) and saying the research was done in their pharmacology department by Pharmacologists, you were talking about putting Pharmacology in Pharmacy..... we were saying different things.

In the US, Pharmacology is a standalone department not under Pharmacy, though like 3 schools still have them mixed up.

The fact still remain that Pharmacologist end research is Pharmacist market tool. People easily mistake a Pharmacist (a drug administrator) as the brain behind drug molecular mechanisms which is the job of a Pharmacologist (a drug researcher).

A little bit of correction, the host cell is not the mitochondria, however, the latter is simply one of the organelles within the cell forming part of the resources which the virus taps into, in this case the mitochondria being the respiratory powerhouse taken over by the virus to provide it with its energy requirement and which the drug blocks from performing.

It's no bogus research.....The mitochondria here are those of the host cell. Ideally, the mitochondria helps infected cell to auto-destroy themselves by a mechanism called apoptosis. But in HIV infected cells, this ability is impaired hence allowing infected cells to keep on living and multiplying.
