Match Preview & Injury news

Steve Clarke will be travelling to Anfield in the hope he can repeat the feat against the former club he was once assistant manager of. The Baggies of course don’t have the powerhouse of Romelu Lukaku in their ranks this season, but have proved they have threats elsewhere which has seen them win at Old Trafford against Manchester United as well as taking a draw against Arsenal.

Liverpool will be viewing this game as a ‘must win’ given the difficult run of fixtures that they will face in the next two months, and will hope there are no goals conceded from set-pieces this week. Dropping points here could well be a bit of a blow to their credentials for a Champions League place but they have had a good start to the season as they sit 3rd, two points behind Arsenal at the top. West Brom have proved difficult to beat on the road so far this season, and currently sit 12th on ten points.

Lucas Leiva should return for Liverpool in midfield after missing the past two league games, one for suspension and the other because of the birth of his child. There were suggestions Philippe Coutinho could return for this game but next week’s trip to Arsenal is deemed to be the likelier return date. Jose Enrique is a doubt whilst Iago Aspas is recovering from a thigh injury and unlikely to return until December.

West Brom could welcome Scott Sinclair into the side after Steve Clarke suggested he could be fit for the trip to Anfield. The Baggies are still without Zoltan Gera and Ben Foster is still recovering from a broken foot.

Statistics

Daniel Sturridge is Liverpool’s top scorer in the league with seven goals this season.

Morgan Amalfitano is West Brom’s top scorer in the league with two goals this season.

Liverpool last six: Won 3, Drawn 2, Lost 1

West Brom’s last six: Won 2, Drawn 3, Lost 1

Liverpool’s home form: Played 4, Won 3, Drawn 0, Lost 1, Goals For 5, Goals Against 2

West Brom’s away form: Played 4, Won 1, Drawn 3, Lost 0 Goals For 2, Goals Against 1

Liverpool had 62% possession in their last league match, a 2-2 draw away to Newcastle.

West Brom had 50% possession in their last league match, a 0-0 draw away to Stoke City.

Five players to watch

Victor Moses

With Coutinho still likely to be absent, Moses will be occupying his position as the ‘number ten.’ His place in the side is going to be under the spotlight, so a big performance here will do him no harm.

Scott Sinclair

Sinclair could be included in Steve Clarke’s side this weekend. Will he get the opportunity to impress and cause Liverpool’s defence some problems?

Daniel Sturridge

Currently the Premier League’s leading scorer, Sturridge has scored in all but one game this season, with an impressive record of seven goals from eight games. Will he get his eighth league goal of the season this weekend?

Morgan Amalfitano

Amalfitano has been impressive since signing for the Baggies on loan and has played a big part in a couple of big games this season for West Brom. His performance at Old Trafford was crucial to West Brom taking all three points, can he do something similar at Anfield?

Lucas

Lucas is likely to reclaim his place in the Liverpool starting eleven this weekend. It will be interesting to see if there is a noticeable difference in the way the team plays with the Brazilian back at the heart of the midfield.

Last time they met

Liverpool 0-2 West Brom, Premier League February 2013.

It was an incredibly frustrating night for Liverpool as they lacked that killer instinct which left hopes of European football were getting slimmer and slimmer. West Brom had Ben Foster in very good form, pulling off a string of good saves including a Steven Gerrard penalty ten minutes from time when the scoreline was 0-0. Gareth McAuley headed home a corner to give West Brom the lead immediately after, before substitute Romelu Lukaku bullied his way through the Liverpool defence to slot home a second, meaning the Baggies completed the double over Liverpool.
