Being a video vixen in Nigeria is a relatively new trend as more and more mainstream hip-hop videos adopt the use of skimpily dressed go-go dancers to captivate and seduce their viewers. But does the use of vixens empower or exploit these young ladies? When considered ethically from a Kantian perspective; the need to be a video vixen is not a hypothetical imperative but a categorical one. The utiliitarian perspective on the other hand would rather consider whether the trend gives pleasure to a majority or not.
Either ways, for one to argue in favour of any of the above schools of thought, it is necessary to consider the pros and cons of being a video vixen, especially in Nigeria.


PROS
Among the benefits of being a model or a go-go girl in a music video, a video vixen gets to:

1) Keep Fit
The most important aspect of this career is to be in good shape. This requires constant trimming exercises that makes a lady look young, beautiful and healthy as Kaffy in a long while. The numerous benefits of keeping fit cannot be over-emphasized in this piece.

2) Earn A Living
Being a vixen helps to fill the vacuum of unemployment for many young girls without sufficient academic qualifications. They make a lot of money for just smiling to the left, blinking to the right and/or shaking their bum (just like any other girl would in a party).

A vixen gets to have a media personality of her own after featuring in a couple of videos. This adds to her popularity and most likely enhances her career. If she chooses to become an actress or a supermodel afterwards, her popularity will add an advantage to her new career.

Before they venture into this profession, prospective vixens usually consider the negative implications attached to this profession such as:

1) Bad Publicity
In order to retain high level of patronage in this profession, one has to stay in media gossips but avoid bad publicity at the same time. It is not uncommon to mistake video vixens for girls of easy virtue and such reputation can get one nearly ostracized in certain social institutions, especially in a country like Nigeria with moral majority. In many cases, this job might prevent a girl from getting married early because of the way people view her. Being an independent lady however, is not a better option since most vixens hardly invest in anything except for expecting freebies which might decline as they get older.

2) Introduction To Hard Drugs
In as much as this profession requires a girl to strip nearly unclad, some experienced girls usually proffer hard drugs to young aspiring vixens, to ward off any form of shame they may feel in the career of seduction. Hard drugs are mainly addictive and would cause a lady to do regretful things they might not even remember. Hence, they get to live in a world of illusion, confusion and wastefulness.

Conclusively, there may be strong societal pressures that might go against our passions but one always need a good enough reason to do what he/she does. A vixen should be well aware of the social implications of her job and question herself whether she is being empowered or exploited.
