HISTORY
Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University (UMYU), formerly Katsina State University was established by the Katsina State Government out of the desire to improve access to higher education for its citizenry.
The law establishing the Katsina State University was passed by the Katsina State House of Assembly on 5th September 2006. The University commenced academic activities in January 2007 with three faculties(Education, Humanities & Natural and Applied Sciences), and 16 undergraduate programmes. The university will build upon existing academic strength, a total of 13 faculties, 76 departments and 236 academic programmes (undergraduate and postgraduate) at the end of its 25 year period of it’s academic phasing, which is divided into four years each.

VICE CHANCELLOR’S MESSAGE

As you begin your journey to attain tertiary education, I welcome you to Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, a citadel of learning on the edge of the sahara, in a city known for its tradition and thirst for knowledge over the centuries. Your choice of this University among 120 Universities in the country must have been informed by not mere sentiments of being citizens of Nigeria and Katsina State, but a common belief that the University will offer you all that is required to attain your goals of knowledge, character and learning.

University Education, unlike any other form of education is not mainly about classroom or laboratory instructions. It is an educating process based on individuality. You determine what you want to learn, how you want to learn it and at what time to learn it. What I am saying is that you have an enormous responsibility on your shoulders to determine the outcome of your University learning experience. The onus is on you to score very highly, to access the vast body of knowledge and information available on campus, in the University Library, Faculty and Department Library and the internet. It is up to you as individuals to follow all instruction and ensure successful outcome of your University stay. It is up to you to ensure that you have an impeccable record of good character, gentlemanly behavior and being at home and at ease and friendly with your fellow students, while remaining respectful to the teaching and non-non teaching staff of the University.

The learning facilities required are available and open to you, in particular the e-library and the vast collection of books and journals in the library. You must ensure that you utilize these to enrich your learning experience.

The University rules and regulations were put in place to ensure that no one individual infringe on the rights of others and that everyone had equal access to all learning and social resources. Follow the rules. Finally, ensure that you have a personal goal written in your own handwriting on why you are in this University and what you wish to achieve at the end of each academic session, and to your graduation. Review these goals from time to time and see if you are measuring up. If not, take time to audit your activities and make amendments.
