BizBooks: I’m not making this up. This happens to be the informed opinion of a Toyota
Salesman in Lagos regarding the ban on importation of tokunbo cars. Here’s
the exact quote:

“…our Camry is about N9 Million now. But I can assure you that when
we reflect the new 70% duty and levy…Camry will be about N20 Million”

This represents an increase of more than 100%. We can expect all other car prices
to go up by that much in 2014. Unfortunately, Nigeria is like a nation on a barber's
chair. We move whichever direction our leaders push us, good or bad with little or
no resistance.

It is not too late to put a stop to this ill-advised policy. Contact every elected
and government official you know by email, phone, twitter, facebook etc.
Make
your opinion known to them. If enough people complain, this policy might be
reversed.

Note: The Toyota Salesman was referring to a brand new Toyota Camry.

Disclosure: The writer is an importer of tokunbo cars and will profit from a
reversal of this policy.

OP, post their contacts here so we can start contacting them.

The government is increasing Duty on cars so that Nigerians would buy that crap that Innoson, PAN and all those Chinese assembly companies are building abi?! grin

No hating o!! I think Innoson is doing a good job, but I dont think that this is the way to encourage him..

All that will end up happening is that People will resort to going into Cotonou to buy cars and drive it across the boarder. It would be cheaper to buy a Car in Cotonou, register it, drive it across the border under the Ecowas treaty and change the plates once its in..

sopoundz: Nice move. Its high tym diz manufacturers come into 9ja n build or assemble d cars here....
Good Move indeed.. the plans advanced by the FG are not even at basic stages yet, all that has been identified are business clusters that the FG can direct funding for local and international auto-manufacturers to encourage local assembly of autos and parts. even the local innosson will be far beyond the reach of a 500k per month salary earner.. the reforms will ultimately start impacting the local industry in the next 10-15 years.. by that time every joe will start using BRT and public transport because autos will be too expensive to buy, (tokunbo, nigerian-used, brand new) but at least we can boast of generating new jobs for former employed bankers and oil & gas employees in the new auto-plants grin grin grin

Reforms in Nigeria are like a doctor's prescription for several ailments.. 1-shot with no considerations of the impact (negative) and how long.. Aganga will be long gone from the System by 2015 .. way after the effects of this has torn people to shreds

We have Innoson here in Nigeria. It is a blessing in disguise for those who understand. It is high time we stark kicking the crackhead west out of our land. But leadership by example.

Let the govrnment lead by patronising locally built automobiles
Re: Toyota Camry To Cost N20 Million In 2014 by stagger: 4:26pm On Nov 21, 2013
All people need to do is to buy cars abroad and ship them down here, pay the new customs duty and their cars are through. I do not think that a new Camry will now cost N20m. The present duty is 20%. The increase is by about 50%, which means that if you pay N300,000 duty on a 2002 or 2003 model car, you end up paying 300,000 X 3.5 = N1.05m on duty. So assuming you bought a car for N1.2million equivalent, the cost of your car stays the same but your duty has increased by about N700,000. So a car that will cost N1.5m with the old duty will now cost N2.2m.

There will be an increase but it will not be as alarmist as the OP is making it sound. Besides the 2 houses still have to ratify this so there is opportunity for lobby groups to do their job before the policy is passed.

vislabraye: 20million? Their cars will rot. Let's see how Toyota will make any sale.

That is the main idea of the policy.. it will attract Toyota to setup an assembly plant in Nigeria.. and do the importation in bits and pieces… sell at same 9million or even less……

Its a very hard policy but i think it will be beneficial in the long run….. The first coy to come in will have the largest market share
