4. Time to talk money
Dealers and other sellers will use different sources to price their used cars, such as Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds and NADA guides. Use these as ballpark figures; these prices are just guides; they are not set in stone. Make a low opening offer that is still in the ballpark of what you are willing to pay, and if the seller knows you’ve done research on the car, they will trust that you aren’t just throwing out a random number. Stay calm and relaxed while negotiating so there is no friction making the conversation negative between you and the seller.

5. Add it all up!
In order to stay organized and in charge, write down the prices discussed for everything including additional fees, such as sales tax or dealer fees. Other things to keep in mind are things like extended warranty, interest, and maintenance costs. Find out if major maintenance services will be very expensive for the car you are interested in through the dealership or a trusted mechanic, whom you should visit prior to finalizing your used car purchase. This information will give you the best understanding of what the total cost of this car will be.

A good way to begin developing preferences is to look around the road to see if anything moves you. What are your neighbors driving? What are your coworkers driving? What have you seen on the highway or around town that appeals to you?

If you aren’t tuned in to what’s on the road, no worries. Visit sites like www.consumerguide.com/find-used-car-review/, http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/cars-trucks/rankings/used/ and www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/index.htm to read the used car reviews to get some practical information on what fits your needs best. If maintenance costs are important to you also visit sites like http://www.edmunds.com/tco.html.

Automotive Title Brands

What is a Title Brand?

Title brands tell potential customers whether a used vehicle has sustained damage or might be potentially unsafe to drive. Note that if a vehicle's title has been "branded," it is an official designation made by a state agency and should appear on the vehicle's title paperwork. Neither individuals nor private companies can brand titles.

Benefits of buying a Used Vehicle wink

When it comes to purchasing something important, most buyers wonder how they can get most out of the money invested. This can be seen mainly in the case of buying used vehicles as price is not fixed.

It is seen that when the price, depreciation and insurance are all added up, it is beneficial to buy a used vehicle. In a used vehicle, expensive add ons that you wouldn’t be able to afford otherwise can be had.

But buying a used vehicle can also be risky. There are many people who have unknowingly bought vehicles that turned out to be lemons and could do nothing about it. So how do we know what is right for us?

You can search in the net the type of car you want. start your search with the desired vehicle body style. Then come to safety features, towing capacity, gas mileage etc. After choosing one or two models, setting a budget as well as checking on the mileage of the vehicle is done. The mileage of the vehicle tells the condition of the vehicle and if maintenance was done regularly. Finding about VIN is essential, The VIN can be got from the seller or online services.

When you go for inspecting the vehicle for the first time its important to see it thoroughly internally as well as externally. Taking along a friend or someone who has mechanical knowledge is a good idea, as they can point out things which we may have missed. The parking area also gives lot of information about the vehicle and its problems.

While on a test drive having knowledge about these things are important. :

Does the vehicle have enough leg and head space for people who would use it regularly?
Is the acceleration what you wanted?
When brakes are pulled does the vehicle slow down slowly?
How does the vehicle feel when roads are bumpy?
Can the controls and displays inside the vehicle be read and easily accessed ?
Listening to any type of sound is important, but to be sure get it checked by a trained mechanic.

After deciding on the vehicle it is important to negotiate a price which would be based on the research and information about the vehicle. Before closing the deal it is important to check and get in writing everything that we has been agreed upon, particularly any sort of warranty or money back guarantee.

Title: Salvage smiley

A salvage title is often issued by states when a vehicle is damaged and the cost to repair is significant (usually if it is over a certain percentage of fair market value). One way a vehicle may end up with a salvage title is when an insurance company declares a vehicle a total loss.

If the salvage vehicle is rebuilt, the "Salvage" title brand might be changed to a "Rebuilt Salvage." Usually such a change requires an inspection.

A problem often occurs when a salvaged and rebuilt vehicle is sold in another state. Because title brand definitions vary by state, sometimes a title brand will not transfer to the title in the new state, which means the title becomes "clean." Unscrupulous sellers can increase the sale price of rebuilt cars by "cleaning" or "washing" the titles by registering them in states where the title brands do not transfer.

To protect yourself from such hidden title brands, purchase an AutoCheck vehicle history report. AutoCheck receives title brand, registration and other important information over the life of the vehicle, regardless of where the vehicle is registered.

Even if a vehicle moves to another state that doesn't recognize certain brands, the AutoCheck vehicle history will still reflect all previously reported title brands.

“Branded Title” applies to any vehicle which has experienced catastrophic distress; “flood” (if the car has EVER been submerged in water), “totalled” (if the car has ever been paid off or replaced by insurance), and “reconstructed” (recertified for road use after being ‘salvaged’ or otherwise ‘branded’) are the most common designations.

All the above were devised to protect consumers from shady car dealers. In the early days it was disgustingly common for a dealer to roll back the odometer, put a few replacement parts on a totalled car, or patch together junkers with duct tape and baling wire.

Title Brands: Water Damage

With that said, there are still a few things you can check for that may indicate whether the vehicle has sustained significant water damage:

Does the vehicle have rust in spots that should have minimal contact with water (such as the dashboard or glove compartment)?
Does the vehicle have a moldy or musty smell?
Are the electrical parts (such as the air conditioner, windshield wipers, etc.) in good working order?
Check the floorboard carpet for water residue or stain marks from evaporated water.
Check for rust on screws in the console or other areas where the water would normally not reach unless submerged.
Check for mud or grit in alternator crevices, behind wiring harnesses and around the small recesses of starter motors, power steering pumps and relays.
Check the electrical wiring system, looking for rusted components, water residue or suspicious corrosion.
Inspect the undercarriage of other components for evidence of rust and flaking metal that would not normally be associated with late-model vehicles.

Title Brands: Lemon shocked

It is common to call any car that has excessive mechanical problems a "lemon." However, you might not know that each state has its own standards (or "lemon laws" ) on what actually makes a vehicle a lemon. In fact, not all states even have lemon laws.

Generally speaking, if a certain element of a vehicle has malfunctioned several times while under warranty, and this malfunctioning element makes the car inoperable or unsafe to drive, such a vehicle could be branded by the state as a lemon on its title.

The key point is that the problem with the vehicle must be so severe as to make the vehicle a) undriveable or b) unsafe to drive. If your car is making a strange noise, but drives just fine, most likely your vehicle would not be classified as a lemon. If your car's brakes or headlights don't work or if the car cannot drive in reverse, those are more serious problems that would probably make the car a lemon.

Another key point is that the manufacturer be given a chance to repair the problem. If the vehicle continues to have the same problem (even after three or four attempts to repair it), the vehicle can be branded as a lemon. In addition, the problems must have occurred during the warranty period.

JUNK TITLE; NON-REBUILDABLE; CERTIFICATE OF DESTRUCTION; BILL OF SALE-PARTS ONLY

These designations indicate the fact that 100% or more of the Actual Cash Value of the vehicle was involved in an incident. Any vehicle with these terms on the title will not be eligible to be rebuilt and operated on public highways. These vehicles can be used for racing or as a source of parts for other projects or sales. Do not believe anyone who tells you otherwise.

The Rules of Buying Damaged Cars from Insurance Companies

If you are looking for salvaged cars the best place to find them is the insurance company. They usually have a collection of cars damaged by accidents or some natural calamity. The cost of repair at times exceeds the market value of the car. It is then taken up by the insurance company. Stolen cars are also part of their collection. You will get both old and recent models of cars. They keep imported cars too. These are usually sold at a cheaper price but you may not get total coverage of the insurance for your car. There are certain steps you should take if you wish to buy a salvaged car. You must have your cash ready before you go to buy the car. Make an estimate of how much you may need for the car and stay prepared because there are times when the payment needs to be made immediately. Payment options can be enjoyed from certain car auctions. The next step is to keep a close watch for car auctions where you will get to see a wide variety of cars ready for sale. Before buying the car have a good look at it. There are insurance companies that sell their damaged cars to auction houses. If you have problems attending an insurance auction you can do so online. Either participate live or submit a bidding prior to the auction, according to your suitability. Having done this, prepare a contract for the seller before you make any payments. Instead of verbally discussing the terms and conditions, have them written down so that there is no chance of swindling. The contract will prevent the seller from going back on his words. Remember to take all the necessary documents and an application for the name transfer, from the owner. As you make your payment make sure you have all the important papers with you. Having acquired all of these then proceed to take possession of your new car. There are certain auctions that export cars to other states too. In that case you should check out the different modes of delivery. At times cars are shipped off to other states at a minimum cost. Before you attend an auction make certain that it is meant for the general public because some auctions are meant only for the insurance companies and authorized auto dealers. At times you may need to pay a fee for the entry. Once you purchase a car at an auction you do not have the liberty to reject it even if you find the vehicle to be defective.

Vehicle title branding is the use of a permanent designation on a vehicle's title, registration or permit documents to indicate that a vehicle has been written off due to collision, fire or flood damage or has been sold for scrap.

The designation or brand is mandatory in most provinces and states in North America when an insurer or vehicle owner writes off a vehicle as a "total loss". Typically this means the cost to repair the vehicle would equal or exceed the car's value, although legal definitions vary.

Re: Learn About Title Brands And Say Goodbye To Guesswork by Export1: 10:17am On Dec 14, 2016
In North America, the vast majority of vehicle titles are issued by individual provinces/states and territories. Most have implemented some branding scheme to warn subsequent owners of a vehicle of severe damage to a vehicle due to collision, theft or disaster . The brands and the criteria used to assign them vary widely from one jurisdiction to another.

Typically, these include some variant of:

1)
None (clear), Normal Has not been branded in this jurisdiction. May be a vehicle which has not been in an accident or has been in an accident minor enough that the cost of repair was less than the cost to write off the vehicle. May also be a vehicle which sustained severe damage in some other jurisdiction (if laws between the two differ significantly) or which was damaged and repaired before the introduction of vehicle branding or was damaged or repaired without notification to an insurance company.

Re: Learn About Title Brands And Say Goodbye To Guesswork by Export1: 10:55am On Dec 14, 2016
2) type of the title:

Rebuilt Rebuilt Salvage or Prior Salvage
A vehicle that has been previously branded as salvage but has been rebuilt/repaired and reinspected. These vehicles are driveable but the rebuilt brand remains on the vehicle's title/registration documents permanently. Some jurisdictions require that rebuilt vehicles imported across provincial or state lines be reinspected before being allowed to retain the rebuilt title.

Title types wink

Irreparable Junk - Fire - Flood damaged: A vehicle that can be used for parts or scrap only.

buyback lemon- State "lemon laws" often require that, if vendor attempts to repair a problem under a new-car warranty repeatedly fail, the manufacturer or dealer buy back or replace the vehicle. Depending on the jurisdiction, this may be required to be disclosed to subsequent owners of a problem car.
wrecked WRK crushed baled- Vehicle has been permanently dismantled or recycled as scrap metal. This status effectively prevents the VIN from the destroyed vehicle from ever being re-used.
theft recovery - While stolen is a status and typically not a brand (as licensing agencies can refuse to issue any title document once a vehicle is stolen), previously-stolen vehicles are often found dismantled, vandalised or destroyed through arson. Many are then branded and may be irreparable.

abandoned found on road dead - The vehicle was found abandoned by its previous owner. Typically not a brand, but may need to be disclosed in some jurisdictions.

taxi police fleet - The vehicle has been used in public transportation, law enforcement, daily rental or commercial applications which represent an above-average likelihood of wear-and-tear. Not a brand, but typically must be disclosed to subsequent buyers.

ADVANTAGES OF BUYING USED CARS wink

Price — Comparing apples to apples, a used car is going to be less expensive. The relative advantage of the used-car price can also allow a buyer to step up to a nicer model.

Depreciation — Cars lose value with each passing month and mile, but the steepest decline happens right away; some models can lose 40 percent or more of their value in the first year. With a used car, there’s no depreciation hit the second you roll off the lot. There’s also less mental depreciation, no need to worry about the first parking-lot ding or rock chip in the paint because chances are the car’s previous owner or owners took care of those for you.

Insurance Rates — Like financing, insurance rates will be affected by the age of a car, but in this case the used vehicle tends to be less expensive. A little bit of pre-purchase research will save you from insurance sticker shock, no matter which vehicle you choose.

Choice — Although you obviously can’t build a used car to order, maybe you want a model, option package, or even wheel design that’s no longer made. This wider selection can add to the length of the search, but perfection and satisfaction rarely come easily.

The Nigerian new light vehicle market has halved in 2015 to sink to 23.293 units from 53.900 in 2014 (-57%). Of these, 11.526 were imported through Nigeria’s ports and we now have access to sales of vehicles produced locally, amounting to 11.767. Toyota remains the most popular carmaker in Nigeria with 28% share (-57%) while Ford gains 38% to leap from #5 to #2 with 16.2% share. Kia (-30%), Nissan (-11%) and Mitsubishi (+35%) follow. Chinese manufacturers include BAW (#11), Changan (#12), GAC Trumpchi (#14) and Foton (#15).

The Nigerian automotive market is currently going through a transition phase from full importer towards an aspiration to become one of Africa’s main production hubs. According to the National Automotive Design and Development Council, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Peugeot and Volkswagen cars and SUV, Shacman and MAN Trucks, and Ashok-Leyland buses are now assembled in Nigeria. In August 2015, the Nigerian government awarded licences for 12 new vehicle assembly plants to manufacturers, and a lot of them are Chinese. They include Toyota (Century Autos), Renault (Dana Motors), Joylong, Dongfeng (Coscharis Auto), FAW (Perfection Motors), Tata, Higer (Globe Motors) and Sinotruk.

Luxury vehicles come in nearly any body style or configuration, from a sleek two-seat convertible to an eight-passenger SUV. Edmunds.com classifies vehicles as "luxury vehicles" based on the model's nameplate. Some models bear a nameplate that is not otherwise classified as "luxury," but they still achieve luxury status, typically due to the model's price.

I’m here to talk about the funny names Nigerians give these cars!
It’s amazing how some cars that have become popular end up getting nicknames which are usually as a result of situations surrounding them or their looks.

A lemon is a vehicle (often new) that is found to have several manufacturing defects which may affect the safety, value or use of the vehicle. Any vehicle with numerous, severe issues can be termed so and, by extension, so can any product with flaws too great or severe to serve its purpose.

The word's use to describe a highly flawed item predates its use in describing cars and can be traced back to the beginning of the 20th century as a British and American slang.

Its first attribution to mean a problematic car was in a Volkswagen advertisement created by Julian Koenig and Helmut Krone as part of an advertisement campaign managed by William Bernbach, all advertising executives with the firm Doyle Dane Bernbach in 1960, which was a follow-up to their Think Small advertising campaign for VW.

In the United States the certificate of title for a vehicle (also known as a car title or pink slip; or pinks in the plural) is a legal form, establishing a person or business as the legal owner of a vehicle. Vehicle titles in the U.S. are commonly issued by the state DMV.

The certificate of title normally specifies:

Identifying information about the vehicle, normally at minimum its vehicle identification number, make, and year of manufacture.
The license plate number.
Technical information about the vehicle to define its taxation regime, e.g., its gross vehicle weight, motive power, and purchase price when new.
The name and address of the purchaser or "registered owner" who would normally possess and use it.
If money is owed on the vehicle, the name of the lienholder or "legal owner" to whom this money is owed.

Non-repairable / Parts Only / Export Only / Bill of Sale: A non-repairable or parts only title indicates that the vehicle cannot be titled or registered in the U.S. again. These vehicles may be exported in most cases.

Reconstructed Title: A reconstructed title is issued when a vehicle has been repaired and has passed its state's reconstructed title procedure. Once a reconstructed title has been issued the vehicle can be insured, registered and driven like any other vehicle but the title will always be branded with a reconstructed or previous salvage notation.

Re: Learn About Title Brands And Say Goodbye To Guesswork by Export1: 7:01pm On Dec 16, 2016
Salvage Title: A salvage title is assigned to a vehicle that has been declared a total loss from Fire, Vandalism, Collision, Theft or Flood. A salvage vehicle such as a theft or flood may have minimal damage or no damage at all. A salvage vehicle cannot be registered or legally driven until a reconstructed title has been issued.

New York 907A: A New York 907A is an ownership form assigned by an insurance company to a vehicle that has been declared a total loss from Fire, Vandalism, Collision, Theft or Flood in New York State. Most other states including Pennsylvania will not accept a New York 907A as proof of ownership.

Auto Auctions - Wholesale

AutoCheck gets data from auto auctions -- companies that act as vehicle clearinghouses and help you get the vehicle you want by providing retail dealers with cars and trucks that sell best at their store. A vehicle that has been through one or more auctions simply is being moved from one market to another, and does not reflect the overall condition of the vehicle.
