Magnus Carlsen of Norway wins World Chess Championship CHENNAI, India, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Norway's Magnus Carlsen Friday defeated Viswanathan Anand of India in the final game of the World Chess Championship. With the win, Carlsen became the new World Chess Champion, dethroning Anand, who won the championship the preceding five years, the Press Trust of India reported. The championship match took place in Anand's home town of Chennai and was the first championship match in which Anand failed win a single game since he began playing professional chess in 1991. Along with the title, Carlsen will take home about $1.53 million in prize money. |
