hello, plz i need somebody help about this router configuration I have 192.168.1.0 has been allocated for my network . I need to use 4 routers and 4 switchs beacuse we have four different departments library: 59 hosts machines account; 54 hosts machines payroll 17 host warehouse 8 host so i had configured all the fastethernet routers using these addreses below. routers 1 fastethernet for the library, 192.168.1.62 /26 routers 2 , for the account, 192.168.1.66 /26 routers 3, for the payroll, 192.168.1.158/27 router 4, for the warehouse.192.168.1.161 /28 they all connects to four switches as well as computers in this scenario routing protocol is using for all the routers like eigrp i have got two questions , which addresses am i going to use for my serial interface wan links , and also which addresses to be advertised on each routers ? i hope u understand my questions. plz a bit of explanations will be needed just like to compare it to what i have got beacause im not really sure about it . it would not allow me to ping to another serial interfaces which i really think it could be wrong. |

@terryboob 4 routers and 4 switches for this setup? Did you make up the requirements or that's the setup your network/question specifies? The truth is the picture painted by your question is incomplete. To be more detailed, can you sketch a network diagram of your requirements and include it with your post? Cos its been crazy for me trying to picture it from your statement. Cheers! |

Mate, Just a small word of warning to say that I haven't done this in a very long time as I moved on from inter-networking. However, I'm most certain that this solution would help you. So, here goes: Network 1 - LIBRARY IP Address: 192.168.1.0 (note - assign this IP address to the first router). Then, connect the first switch to this router. Finally, all the 59 hosts in the library would be connected to this switch. Sunet Mask: 255.255.255.192 (note: enter this on the router) Hosts: From: 192.168.1.1 To: 192.168.1.62 Notes (a) Having connected the first switch to the first router, assign the IP address 192.168.1.1 to it. (b) Connect each of the 59 computers in the Library to the switch in step (a) (c) Finally, assign the IP addresses starting from 192.168.1.2 (first host), 192.168.1.3 (second host) and so on, until all the 59 machines have been assigned an IP address. The last usable IP address in this subnet should be 192.168.1.62. Broadcast Address: 192.168.1.63 Network 2 - ACCOUNTS DEPARTMENT IP Address: 192.168.1.64 (note: connect the second router to the first router as per above. Then, assign the IP address 192.168.1.64 to this second router. The subnet mask would be shown automatically so, you don't need to worry about it. Hosts: From: 192.168.1.65 To: 192.168.1.126 Note: (a) Connect the second switch to the second router and assign the IP address 192.168.1.65 to it. Remember, the second router is already connected to the first router. However, you are now only connecting the second switch to the second router. (b) Connect each of the 54 computers in the Accounts Department to the switch above (c) Finally, assign the IP addresses starting from 192.168.1.66 (first host), 192.168.1.67 (second host) and so on, until all the 54 machines have been assigned an IP address. The last usable IP address in this subnet is 192.168.1.126. Broadcast Address: 192.168.1.127 Network 3 - PAYROLL IP Address: 192.168.1.128 (note: connect the third router to the first router as per above. Then, assign the IP address 192.168.1.128 to this third router. The subnet mask would be shown automatically so, you don't need to worry about it. Hosts: From: 192.168.1.129 To: 192.168.1.190 Note: (a) Connect the third switch to the third router and assign the IP address 192.168.1.129 to it. Remember, the third router is already connected to the first router. However, you are now only connecting the third switch to the third router. (b) Connect each of the 17 computers in the Payroll Department to the switch above (c) Finally, assign the IP addresses starting from 192.168.1.130 (first host), 192.168.1.131 (second host) and so on, until all the 17 machines have been assigned an IP address. The last usable IP address in this subnet is 192.168.1.190. Broadcast Address: 192.168.1.191 Network 4 - WAREHOUSE IP Address: 192.168.1.192 (note: connect the fourth router to the first router as per above. Then, assign the IP address 192.168.1.192 to this fourth router. The subnet mask would be shown automatically so, you don't need to worry about it. Hosts: From: 192.168.1.193 To: 192.168.1.254 Note: (a) Connect the fourth switch to the fourth router and assign the IP address 192.168.1.193 to it. Remember, the fourth router is already connected to the first router. However, you are now only connecting the fourth switch to the fourth router. (b) Connect each of the 8 computers in the Warehouse to the switch above (c) Finally, assign the IP addresses starting from 192.168.1.194 (first host), 192.168.1.195 (second host) and so on, until all the 8 machines have been assigned an IP address. The last usable IP address in this subnet is 192.168.1.254. Broadcast Address: 192.168.1.255 I really hope that you find this information most useful. I've gone out of my way to explain it to you, as succinctly as possible. kiwi992. |

All Kiwi is trying to explain is very simple and straight forward, you have 4 different departments and you are to have 4 routers as well. Having decided on the network or broadcast domain, you have at most 256 nodes to add to the network thereby dividing them into 4 different networks,so you will have 1-62 as the next number will be the Broadcast address,so thats how is will continue till you get to the last node. Hope its all understandable. |

Terryboob, You are most welcome. It's all in the name of Nairaland. kiwi992. NB: Just to say that you could, instead of connecting the three routers directly to the first router (as described above), also connect the: a. second router to the switch which is connected to the first router b. third router to the switch which is connected to the second router c. fourth router to the switch which is connected to the third router. The rest instructions are exactly the same. |

kiwi992:. With this connecting a switch to multiple routers case. Did you give "gateway" a thought at all? |
