ASUU Strike: FUTO Denies Firing All Academic Staff by infonubia(m): 8:04pm On Dec 03, 2013
The Public Relations Officer of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Chike Ezenwa, has denied that the school management sacked the striking lecturers of the university.

He denied the sack report via a telephone call to a reporter today in Owerri, the capital of Imo state.

A press release on the school's website dated Dec. 2, 2013 states thus:

The Senate of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri at its 375th Extraordinary meeting held on Monday, December 2, 2013 considered the directive of the Federal Government on resumption of duty by Academic Staff in Federal Universities and decided that academic activities in the University should resume immediately for the conclusion of the 2012/2013 Rain Semester.

Consequently all students of the University are required to return to campus between Monday December 2, and Friday December 8, 2013 while Rain Semester Examinations commence on Monday December 9, 2013 and end on Saturday December 21, 2013.

Accordingly, all academic staff are required to proceed immediately to their respective Departments to sign in for resumption of duty not later than Wednesday December 4, 2013.

Based on this press release, it is safe to say that the school has chosen to comply with the Federal Government's directive.

It's about time the strike ended. I remember spending about 6 months (or longer) at home during my first year in FUTA. It delays the students unnecessarily. Especially in a country like Nigeria where age is an important factor in securing a good job.

The school website is your source. While you are at it, please tell me why a news of such magnitude is only reported by Tribune? What happened to other news outlet?

According to the Tribune,
The sack order was made known by the Public Relations Officers (PRO) of the institution, Mr Chike Ezenwa, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune in Owerri, through telephone.
According to him, the senate of the university had declared all the positions of academic staff in the institution, adding that they would be advertised starting from Monday, December 2.

However, what the school posted on Dec. 2nd is a press release. Besides, is a sack communicated to reporters over the phone? wouldn't there be an official letter to the affected lecturers?

I thought as much. How could all the lecturers be sacked? It must be some empty threat.
