Nigerian Premier League champions Kano Pillars and former African champions Enyimba International have been handed Congolese and Togolese opponents respectively in the preliminary round of the 2014 CAF Champions League. In the fixtures released by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Tuesday in Cairo after Monday’s draws, Pillars will take on AS vita of DR Congo. The draw for the 18th edition of the CAF Champions League was held in Marrakech, Morocco on Monday, Dec. 16. Enyimba International FC of Aba, who were Nigerian premier league runners-up last season and were twice African champions, would face Anges De Notse of Togo. Pillars will play their first leg game away and host their opponents in the second leg, while Enyimba will host the first leg of their pairing. The competition, which is now in its 50th edition as a championship but 18th as a league, will involve 52 clubs in the preliminary round. Matches in the round will hold in February, with the first leg between Feb. 7 and Feb. 9 and the second leg between Feb. 14 and Feb. 16, 2014. The 26 winners in the preliminary round will be joined at the round of 32 by six other clubs, who drew bye, for the competition’s first round. These are title-holders Al Ahly of Egypt, Coton Sport of Cameroon, TP Mazembe of DR Congo, El-Hilal of Sudan, CS Sfaxien of Tunisia and Esperance Sportive de Tunis of Tunisia.(NAN) |

Bayelsa United and Warri Wolves have been exempted from taking part in the preliminary round of the 2014 Caf Confederation Cup. Both Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) clubs will start off their run in the Caf Confederation Cup from the round of 32. Bayelsa United, who finished third in the Nigerian top flight in 2012/13 season, will await the winners from the preliminary round clash between Congo's Konzo and an unnamed Cameroonian club. Head coach of Bayelsa United, Ladan Bosso, is happy that his team have been drawn bye in the Caf Confederation Cup. "It's good for us and it allows more time to prepare well for the competition. But we know the Confederation Cup will not be an easy competition so we will be prepared for whoever comes our way," said Bosso to supersport.com. As for Warri Wolves, they could come up against tougher opposition in the round of 32. The Seasiders are drawn by Caf to face either US Douala of Cameroon or Aslad de Moundou of Chad. Bayelsa United and Warri Wolves are expected to kick off their campaign in the continent's second tier club competition in the first week of March. |

Nigeria champions Kano Pillars have registered several new signings led by Kingsley Udoh for next year’s Champions League. Other new signings on the squad for the continental competition include Sharks goalkeeper Danladi Isa, Ezekiel Mba and Eneji Otekpa. Former Nigeria Olympic team international central defender Udoh has teamed up with Pillars from Heartland. Pillars have also entered their establish stars like Gambo Mohammed, Rabiu Ali, Shehu Abdullahi and Joel Afelokhai for Africa’s foremost club contest. On February 8, Pillars will host experienced campaigners AS Vita of DR Congo in the preliminary round first leg of the Champions League. The return leg will be played in DRC a week later. This will be Pillars fourth appearance in the competition with their best showing being a semi-final finish in the 2009 competition. Two-time champions Enyimba are Nigeria’s other representatives in the Champions League. |

Enyimba will hope to get off to a winning start in next year’s Champions League when they clash with Togo’s Ange de Notse in the prelims. The two-time African champions are back in international football after a two-year absence. And goalkeeper Femi Thomas has told MTNFootball.com they hope to get off to a flying start on February 9, when they host Ange de Notse. "We are preparing hard for the game, we will do all to beat Ange de Notse,” Thomas said. “I played against the club in a friendly match in 2006 when I was with the U20 national team, though it has been long, we won 3-1 then. There are no small teams again, so we won't let Nigerians down." Enyimba, who finished as runners-up in the Nigeria league last season, have embarked on a massive re-organisation following the departure of coach Salisu Yusuf to El Kanemi Warriors. Last month, Ange de Notse won a first-ever Togolese league title after they recorded 59 points from 30 matches, two points more than closest rivals Douanes. |
