hello i'm kinda fused up sometimes, what is the different between a Design Agency and a Advertsing Agency mainly looking at, most of the time, i do what the advert agency does sometimes, Advertiser or Designer they are also Visual communicators,, well maybe i don't get it, can someone just point this out to me so i could be clear with it, Design Agency and Advertising Agency

ok, Advertising agencies are into a whole lotta stuff like marketing, branding e.t.c very corporate stuff

Design agencies are usually support for these advert agencies but do their own thing, they are the specialists

Advert agencies usually have design teams in house, but a design agency is wholly on its own.

NOTE: An Advertising Agency is also a design adency but a Design Agency is not an advertising agency


Design groups usually specialize in design aspects only but an Ad Agency specializes in design, contract documents, terms & agreements
and any other neccessary paper work.

Companies usually have a direct link to their Ad Agency while the Ad agency is then linked to the Design group.

For Example,

GTBank ------ Advertisement Agency------- Design Agency/Group

It is hard for you to see a Company that has direct link to Design agencies. Instead, they would have their own communications department (under the same roof) which would have the same function as a Design Agency.

Anybody can start a Design agency/group but nodoby can't just wake up one morning and say he/she wants to start an Ad Firm, It requires a lot than just a group of talents.



Advertising agencies, not only create the advertisements but also pay for the cost of placing the ad in a newspaper or magazine or on television or radio.
While Design Agencies wouldn't or let me say don't even have the power to.



A large advertising agency or department may employ hundreds or thousands of people, including advertising and marketing specialists, designers, writers known as copywriters, artists, economists, psychologists, researchers, media analysts, product testers, librarians, accountants and bookkeepers, and mathematicians.

while a design agency would just employ just designers and a little more others.





Ad Agencies/Firms are usually regulated and registered under a professional body called (i cant remember), while Design Agencies are registered under any (none that i know of sha).

if i must get you right, taking it to the next step on Design Agency, they went into a body called (AAAN ) well you can't say a design company can't pay for newspaper ad, i work with an Indian Company, apart from working on thier Multimedia and Web job, i do most of thier billboard,sinage, and newspaper Designs and when you see them,you will think they are been carried out by an Agency from the AAAN and i can do the paying if i'm been ask to pay.

Most on my paid contract jobs i was hired as web designer/developer are Design agencies and government sectors with in-house designing departments, not Advertising Agency.

Hope this clear to you @smartsoft! I agreed with @whalewale. You have to be cautioned when it comes to Design agency and Ad agency depend on job description of graphic designer they hire you for the job.

Generally, the position of Graphic designers do work both Design agency and Advertising agency.

BankPHB account is held by Insight Communications (d ones responsible for Amstel Malta (AMBO) and Gulder (Ultimate Search etc), while SKYE Bank account is held by Centrespread FCB.

I think you meant to say being a member of APCON (Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria) gives you an advantage in ur job search in an agency. Individuals are not members of AAAN, only agencies can be members. AAAN stands for (Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria).

What's your area of specialty - client service, graphic design (having some drawing skill could also help), copy writing(scripts for ads etc)?

You have to register (or at least start the joining process) for APCON certification. If you studied a course like Mass Comm, then you wouldn't have to write the exams.

APCON's office is behind National Theatre (you can goggle it and check the address/phone number etc).
