prince paris: I love Nigeria, and I love Nigerians. Sentiments before reasons. There are no countries where development was forced. Be it India, Malaysia or anywhere in the west. You first need to get right at home. Develop your own local facilities first. You start with manufacturing small parts then large parts come in. A country that cannot manufacture a simple standard quality headlamp or bulb. India, Indonesia, Malaysia etc that we citing as example did not do it by government fiat. This is 2014 not 1974. We need the infrastructure in place first and foremost. Electricity, Roads, Rail, education etc. India became a technological powerhouse by having a good number highly trained workforce and engineers and a technical infrastructure that enticed western industrialists to come and invest to take advantage of the synergies on offer. Business is never charity. Invest and expect returns. No developed or developing economy can get to the promise land by running on generators. None got dia without a good railway network. All the ingredients are not just ready yet we want to cook the soup. It is not possible. To me this is just a revenue generating and looting gimmmick.

Right on point.... let the decision makers take note!!
There is no way we can begin to MANUFACTURE cars when Ajaokuta is in almost comatose state, where will Innoson and co get the raw materials to manufacture the cars?? So if Innoson and co are producing cars in quote, they are just ASSEMBLING cars all made up of imported components. SO, where is the car manufacturing industry the govt is talking about?

Flyboy Zee:

Do you know that by the early 1960s, the US had begun placing stiff import tariffs on certain vehicles. The chicken tax of 1964 placed a 25% tax on imported light trucks. In response to the tariff, Toyota, Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. began building plants in the US by the early 1980s. (Source: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota.)

This is the precursor to why every motor vehicle manufacturer has a plant in the US. At that time the US had their own infrastructural and economic problems, but that did not deter the car makers. All of una wey no want make all the major car makers build plants for Naija na thunder go fire una Mama and Papa them. Read a little of the US history before you begin to compare Naija to the US. They (US) went through worst situations than Naija in their formative years and these were well documented, before they come the form Big Brother to other countries wey wan try arrange.

Flyboy- take note that in the 60s you talked about, the US had stable power supply, a thriving iron & steel industry coming up after the industrial revolution, had perfected the production of electronics, implements, spare parts, etc, had gone to space and back... the list is endless. All these were on ground be fore 'every car manufacturer began establishing car plants in the US'. Which of the above has the government achieved prior todesiring to set up car manufacturing plqnts in Nigeria.
Lets not put the cart before the horse.
