Georgia and Russia were today on the brink of full-scale war after Russian tanks rolled across the border to back separatists in the breakaway South Ossetia region. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/aug/08/georgia.russia2 |

RichyBlacK: Why won't you "hiss"? If it was the US launching "peacekeeping" operations in a neighboring country, you will be steaming with rage. |
Re: Russia Invades Georgia - Guardian UK by Dreamy: 10:18am On Aug 09, 2008 |
Russia is not exactly invading Georgia. South Ossetia has been an independent region since the year of the break up of the USSR. Blame it on the original partitioning that put North Ossetia in Russia and South Ossetia in Georgia. Georgian president said "this is not about Georgia, it's about America". It seems that he being conscious of Russia's possible response, went to with his campaign in S. Ossetia because he relied on Uncle USA. If he gets disappointed on this one, perhaps Georgia and other states would handle internal crises differently. |

4 Play: Alright, I concede. That hiss was unnecessary especially given the gravity of the situation. Sorry about that. I do not support Russia on this because I believe a diplomatic solution could have been found. |

Ibime: Interesting point of view, and I agree with you for the most part. The reality is that if Georgia's military strength stands at a hundred points, Russia's is at a trillion points - no basis for comparison! Russia's response was strong and swift, even though I suspect their intel knew of the invasion of South Ossetia weeks before it happened. I think to prevent loss of (more) lives, Russia could have issued a strong warning to Georgia first (days before the invasion), as a means of resolving the crisis diplomatically. I don't support Russia on this because, being the stronger force, it could have easily forced Georgia to the diplomatic table. If at that stage Georgia still went ahead to invade South Ossetia, then they would have forced their own checkmate. |

Re: Russia Invades Georgia - Guardian UK by TayoD1(m): 1:26pm On Aug 11, 2008 |
@Ibime, The people of South Ossetia all own Russian passports, therefore Russia did not break any law by moving in.Much of what you said makes sense and I do agree to a large extent. However, I do not believe your emboldened quote above. South Ossetia is a break-away province that still is under the territorial integrity of Georgia. This can be comparable to Nigeria claiming Bakassi as her own just because we offered the people Nigerian Passports. By every law and common sense, what makes a piece of real estate part of a country is not who lives in it, but who owns the land. Georgia owns South Ossetia and Russia's military offesnsive under the guise of "peace-keeping" is criminal. That being said, the US has already angered Russia by flying all 2,000 Georgian troops in Iraq back to Georgia. I think if this continues, the US can be dragged into a military confrontation with Russia, but let's hope this does not happen. I can imagine the US sending its own "peace-keepers" to be a buffer between Georgia and the Russian troops. That is a recipe for Armageddon. In my estimation however, I want the US to hands-off this wahala altogether. Let Europe take care of it. Much of America's actions that have being more in Europe's interests are unappreciated anyway. Let all those holier-than-thou hypocrites deal with the wahala. Talking about hypocrites, the deafening silence of the usual mob that condemn Isreal when it defends herself isn't going unnoticed. I thought the same people would be here now condemning the loss of innocent lives. It is obvious that their judgements are clouded by political leanings. |

i stand strongly with russia in this issue how can georgia seceed from russia but wont let ossettia do the same from them. it's like biafra secceeding from nigeria and then refusing south-south from secceeding from biafra. live and let live. if u could pull out from whom u dont like then you should be ready to let someone who doesnt like you pull out from you. |

Ibime: I'm not saying that I'm against Russia's objective, but I think they could have given the Georgians a clear and final warning before striking. My main concern is the loss of innocent lives. I have no sympathy for the Georgian government, I think they've allowed themselves to be used by the West. I stand with South Ossetia and their right to self determination. |
Re: Russia Invades Georgia - Guardian UK by TayoD1(m): 6:40pm On Aug 11, 2008 |
@RichyBlack, I stand with South Ossetia and their right to self determination. This self-determination we are talking about, where and how does it end? At what point is a group's so-called self-determination legitimate while others are not? And to what extent should another nation be involved in the internal wranglings of another with respect to secession? Russia is definitely an outside party here considering the fact that this is more or less a civil matter of a UN recognized independent nation - Georgia. |
Re: Russia Invades Georgia - Guardian UK by Ibime(m): 6:58pm On Aug 11, 2008 |
Tayo-D: Not really. . . . South Ossetians are ethnic Russians. . . . all this UN convention shit doesn't wash with me I'm afraid. UN convention said that Croatia, Bosnia, Kosovo etc were part of Yugoslavia until the people wanted out. . . . . . UN convention also tells me that Las Malvinas aka The Falklands is part of Britain . . . . . but when I look at its position on the globe, I can't help but laugh. . . them wan take person for ode. . . . . . UN convention tells me that Bakassi is part of Cameroun, although the Bakassians chop edikainko like no mans business. . . . UN legitimised the illegitimate Berlin conference of 1914 during the scramble for Africa, causing untold problems like we are witnessing today. . . . . . UN is just a cartel. . . . . . why does UN not try to prevent Scotland from leaving Britain?. . . . . if the country isn't civilised enough to let you leave peacefully, then you must force their hand whether UN like it or not. . . . that is my hope for Nigeria. |

When you request for thunder, then you should be prepared for the rain also. Georgia launched a surprise attack and were they thinking Russia was going to fold their arms while they take over Ossetia ? Considering the fact that these people hold Russian passports. Really this is more of suicide on the part of Georgia (not considering the fact that a proportion of Her army is in Iraq). Not even NATO can save Georgia cause they aren't ready to be drawn into a war. Its a pity that lives are just perishing. |

darfur: lol. . . . . I didn't say the UN was existent in 1914. . . . I said they have accepted the Berlin constitution into UN law, legitimising it. . . . . hence Nigeria had to give up Bakasssi. |

Tayo-D: It was reported that Georgian forces from Iraq would give a bloody fight! Today they are fleeing! i am tempted to ask were they fighting women and children in Iraq? RichyBlacK: Georgians are paying for the killings of South Ossetian people. Western media presenting Russia as an agressor. Where was America when Georgian tanks were rolling over people in South Ossetia. davidylan: Rocket 4where !!!!! Georgians troops are in chaos and fear as as they jampack themself in cars & tanks for a speedy escape. It was reported that some Soldiers left by any means available. Dozens of troops clung to cars on the back of a transporter lorry, while five other soldiers fled on one bike abandoned thier post to the Russians without firing a shot. . The Taliban & Al Qedia never fled in such flenzy manner with America superior weaponary scores of tanks and armoured personnel carriers, Apache's and B1 & B2 F 15 , |

I fully backed Russia in this conflict. US travelled 8000km to Iraqi -> whats that called? Israel destroyed Lebanon because two soldiers were killed. No country would allow its people to be killed. Russia strategy is to isolate Georgia and warn all other WESTERN puppert countries in that region that it would not tolerate any nonsense in their backyard. This strategy will should have used against Cameron but we are too corrupt & lazy, that why we gave them Bakassi on platter of Gold. Mark this: If OIL is discovered in Semme or Badagry; the WEST will instigate Benin republic to claim its their land. The whole world should be happy we still have Russia and China to balance things otherwise the whole world would be under bondage of WEST. 1 Like |

There is no Good war and there is no Bad peace, This will tell other European countries that US is playing the game of divide and rule. All the clamour of defending their European ally only ends with Bush telling us that Russia is trying to occupy Georgia, a sovereign and democratic nation. I can't stop laughing when i read from one of the British tabloids what the Georgian president said. "WE HELPED IN IRAQ NOW COME AND HELP US" But it seems the statement fell of deaf ears. I do not know what gave Georgia the guts to make that move, were they thinking US will come to their aid? I hope Czech Republic and Poland will learn from this. Did you guys noticed that almost all EU leaders are mute on this conflick, Russia is not fighting only because SO was attacked but to stop the enlargement of NATO within its territory and to let other European nations be away that notting do them as far as military power is concerned. |

@ASL33, I do not know what gave Georgia the guts to make that move, were they thinking US will come to their aid? I hope Czech Republic and Poland will learn from this.Would you say Nigeria should not make a move to keep its territorial integrity intact if MASSOB decides to secede? Would you say France has any right to invade Nigeria assuming many of the Easterners were given French Passports? Do you think France would have the right to station unwanted "peace keepers" in Abia State in order to protect and enhance the activities of MASSOB? And would you consider it right for France to be bombing Lagos all because it is protecting MASSOB against the Federal Govt of Nigeria? NB: You can substitute France and Nigeria for Russia and Georgia in this case. |

Would you say France has any right to invade Nigeria assuming many of the Easterners were given French Passports? Yes to protect it citizen. This is constiution every President sworn to upload; protect your citizens. And would you consider it right for France to be bombing Lagos all because it is protecting MASSOB against the Federal Govt of Nigeria? YES, if MASSOB are french people. I do not know what gave Georgia the guts to make that move, were they thinking US will come to their aid? I hope Czech Republic and Poland will learn from this. Good thinking. Thats exactly the message: if anyone of you misbehave, we will punish you hard. The same message WEST is using all over the world. Nothing NEW. Only NIGERIA is sleeping giving away bakassi, when UK flew 9000km to fight for Falklands. |
