Tribal marks and female circumcision at "gun point" by Queenisha: 1:13am On Aug 17, 2008 |
The new bride absorbed the strange request and silently began to weigh the odds against her. While they lived, her parents never saw it necessary to put marks on her face; she wondered how they would have reacted to the suggestions were they alive. Outnumbered, Omobola was told to make up her mind quickly. She really did not have much say in the matter. It was like asking her if she counts herself as a member of that family. She said yes. That was all they needed to pin her to the ground. The in-laws had everything ready, including a sharp knife. But there was no anesthesia. Omobola cried in pains as her chubby cheeks were branded with three marks each. But the horror had only just begun. More women pressed her to the ground. Before she knew what was going on, her wrapper had been hitched up. She had no way of seeing what was going on between her legs. Whatever it was, she could feel it in form of excruciating pains. She let out a terrified scream but it got her nowhere as pieces of rags were forced into her mouth. When it was all over, her worst fears were confirmed. She had just been circumcised at gunpoint. She was two months pregnant. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/features/living/2008/mar/15/living-15-03-2008-001.htm |

Chei, you and this your hatred for yoruba people. When are you going to let this tribal marks issue rest ? You have commented on this and created a thread on this, yet, you keep bringing it up again and again https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-152416.0.html https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-59913.0.html#msg1220984 The next thing you know, you'll say you have nothing against yoruba people. The biafra war was very painful and yorubas might have done you wrong, but you have to learn how to forgive. As a christian woman that you claim to be, you should know that God only forgives those who forgive others Quit using Nairaland as a stool for preaching hatred to yorubas in the guise of bringing up a discussion. |

Arnold1: Arnold If this heinous crime was committed by anyone,I would still post it. It surprises me that you have absolutely no comment related to the story but you choose to basically support this action by your behaviour since in your words,an attack on barbarity is an attack on Yorubas. I'm 100% sure 99.9% of Yorubas would condemn this act. You obviously belong in the twisted 0.1% who would cling to stupidity in the name of tribe. The above story is a crime story. I did not make it up If you're unable to go beyond your nose because the victim happens to be a Yoruba woman and the poster on nairaland happens to be Igbo then you are your own problem. No woman irrespective of tribe should be treated in such a wicked manner. I hope someone captures you and cuts off half of your privates let's see how you'll like it |

There are many igbos on this forum like Ugwumba and Mamaput that are well older than you, infact, Mamaput has narrated stories of her experience during the biafran war. These people, despite their age, do not spew hatred toward the yoruba race as you do, because they are not hateful people. Queenisha, you need to do something about your hatred for yoruba people because it'll have dire effects on you in the long run (including the afterlife) |

God almighty sees where your heart truly is and one day you shall be made accountable if you do not stop this hatred spewing habit of yours |

Those family members to me are not evil and wicked. They were merely doing what they have been taught, what have been passed down to them and is generally accepted to be good.In some places, its believed that an uncircumcised woman dies at childbirth and an uncircumcised female baby grows up to be promiscuous.what we do really need is education and enlightenment.i wonder what those first ladies and women affairs commission do,these ought to be the kind of things they should be doing. . . .teaching, educating and enlightening. Sad story Sha.Omobola seems to be a strong woman.she atleast fought for herself. Its very unfortunate that she lost her daughter. |

ifyalways: How can there be education and enlightenment when many Nigerians believe the exact same fables and myths about uncircumcised men? If a man isn't circumcised, some will say that he will die, he won't produce offspring, he won't be strong, he's not a MAN etc. Culture needs to stop at other people's genitals. No one, male or female, should have their Instruments cut unless they want to. |

This is what the stupid Senator Ufot Ekaette should be fighting against instead of a stupid nudity bill that has no effect on women's lives. They should have used some of the estacode collected for going to NY for a day to debate a stupid and useless issue to raise awareness against FGM. It will still happen but the occurrence will reduce and be eradicated eventually. Yoruba or no Yoruba, thanks for posting the story |

If something is wrong then it is just wrong. God has given us all the ability to be compassionate. Using passed down culture as an excuse does not hold. It is just like saying that people that killed black people in the past should not be jailed today becasue back then blacks were technically not considered 100% human in america. It is just the wickedness of a husband and his family in an effort to instill fear in this young girl that drove them to do this to her. I hope some lawyer will hear her story and take up this case or someone that has money will pay someone to have each and everyone of them tried for murder and aggravated assualt. They will sit in jail and weigh if what they did was right or wrong. What a tragic story. |
