LOL @ medulla oblongata getting damaged Shaping a baby's head shouldnt be a big deal expecially when it's not done with hard objects but warm water, towel & ointment by the way, i learnt some yorubas use some herbs (agbo) at pregnancy to make the baby's head small before birth. (can't tell how far it's true o) if it is,it would be a better alternative i suppose |

The arguments for and against so far have been really interesting. Can any doctor in the house give us a professional opinion? |

"Mishaped" head?? Thats normal with newborns (its called "molding", not to be confused with the act of actually trying to mold it manually), but the babies' head will gain its natural (less oblong) shape. With newborns, the bones of their skulls arent closed like adults' are. They have spaces inbetween the bones in their skulls. This is perfect because then when the baby has to be born, the baby's head can squeeze through the womanly space, without getting crushed and damaged, (i.e its much more flexible, as the bones can move up, against, around to get that big head through the hole). BUT when it DOES pass through, it becomes "mishape"d (lol), and that is okay because those holes in the skulls, will eventually close up. When it does, the shape scull gets reshaped accordingly, hence why you dont see adults with crazy crazy head shapes, unless of course, they are genetically predetermined to, in which case, may GOD bless them lol. But no, PLEASE dont try to mold your baby's head, you can do alot of damages because they still have those holes, so their brain really isnt protected, matter of fact, as "eww" as it sounds, you can actually poke a baby's brain though their scull. Manual molding, is contraindicated, though I understand that some people would say its some sort of cultural obligation, hey, to each his/her own! 1 Like |

~I've had such a laff reading thro! ~My Son's head was cone shaped after birth! It was one of the first thing i noticed when i held him. . .after checking fingers & toes I recall giving the Midwife a woorying look as i enquired why his head was that loong. . She assured me there was nuffin to woory about, this sometimes happen when baby's head goes thro the birth canal & that the head will go back to form on its own in a week!! I wasnt convinced tho & the next couple of days,i read up on it & kept looking at baby's head expecting it to go back to "normal" pronto. . . ~I dont think i stopped talking/woorying about it. . i particularly had this image of babies i've seen on the Birth Channel on telly whose head had this funny shape b/c of the forceps used. . . a boy i knew as a kid whose head was shaped like a bicycle seat! No Kidding! How often i've wondered why his head was shaped like that. .prolly had nuffin to do w/ the birth canal when he was born but Jeez i had me all sorts going thro my head. . .The name calling he had to put up with, the weird looks. . . ~My Mam of Four & Nan of One had told me to dip a face towel in warm water & gently massage baby's head in semi circles. . I was a tad skeptikal. . New Mum,the whole experience was a bit overwhelming. . . but i figured they've been doing it for much longer & wudnt advice me to do it if they didnt belive it worked! SoOoo i followed that routine ceremoniously for a week. . .prolly had nothing to do w/ how round his head is now but it was worth doing! ~In hind sight,I wooried over nowt & it wasnt as if his head was that humongous/coned either. . i suppose mine was a case of new mum wanting everything to be perfect about baby so well-wishers cud "Aaaw" & "Aah" w/o thinking "How dis pekin e head big So" Typical |

Good Day! it is actually good to shape a baby's head but one should do so carefully and without too much force because the bones of a baby are still soft. |
