Flying Eagles Demolish Academy 11-0

Nigeria U20 team, the Flying Eagles, smashed 11 goals past Jay 1 Academy of Abuja in a test game played at the Abuja National Stadium in Abuja on Friday.

Bernard Bulbwa and Abubakar Lawal each grabbed a brace with skipper Musa Muhammed, Ifeanyi Matthew, Ahmed Umar and Sulaiman Abubakar also getting on the scoreboard in a one-sided match.

The Flying Eagles are preparing for next month’s final African Youth Championship qualifier against Lesotho. The first leg will be played on August 16 in Nigeria, while the return match will be in Maseru a fortnight later. The overall winners will advance to the AYC to be hosted by Senegal in March next year.

Chidera Eze trains with FC Porto U19s

Flying Eagles forward Chidera Eze is now training with the FC Porto U19 team and did not travel with the main squad to pre-season in the Netherlands.

Eze has reached an agreement with the Nigeria U20 team not to feature in next month’s final African Youth Championship qualifier against Lesotho so as to focus on his club career.

He scored one of the goals as the Flying Eagles dismantled Tanzania to advance in the qualifying series for Senegal 2015.

But in the process he suffered a hamstring injury, which he has since recovered from.

Eze feature for Nigeria at last year’s FIFA U17 World Cup in United Arab Emirates, where the country clinched a record fourth championship.

Alampasu returns to Belgium after freak injury

Nigeria U20 goalkeeper Dele Alampasu has returned to Belgian club Genk with the hope of bagging a pro contract after he first suffered a freak training ground injury that required surgery while on trials there.

Alampasu is highly rated after he was voted top goalkeeper at last year’s FIFA U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, which Nigeria won in fine style.

He was also on the final squad for the CHAN earlier this year in South Africa.

His agent Sunday Orelaja told AfricanFootball.com that despite the short-lived trials at Genk the youngster had done enough to convince the Belgian club to give him a deal.

“They like him from what he showed during the trials and so he has returned to the club,” the London-based agent disclosed.

"The recent management changes at the club will not affect his chances of getting a contract."

Orelaga also narrated how Alampasu suffered a knee injury while training with Genk.

“He was training with the first-team goalkeeper, who aimed a kick at his knee and before you know it, he was down injured. It was an accident,” he revealed.

Pellegrini: Kelechi can be a star

24 July 2014 05:54 AM
By Paul Handler

The Blues boss was impressed with the performances of his new boys against Sporting Kansas, with Bruno Zuculini and Kelechi Iheanacho particularly impressive.

Kelechi Iheanacho in action in Kansas

Manuel Pellegrini hailed his City new boys after the Blues defeated Sporting Kansas 4-1 in their first US tour match.

Youngster Bruno Zuculini, whose move to City is still to be ratified by the Premier League, scored a cracking early goal, while another young prospect Kelechi Iheanacho was also on target.

More experienced duo goalkeeper Willy Caballero and midfielder Fernando got valuable game time in what was a satisfying opener for the boss.

Pellegrini told MEN Sport in Kansas: "We have new players. Willy Caballero is good keeper and I know him.

"Zuculini is a young player who has come from Argentina and Fernando has more experience in Europe with Porto.

"Both of them had very good performances.

"Finally, Kelechi is just 17 years old and he’s a very important player for us in the future.

"He demonstrated today what he can do in the future. It depends on the way he takes this profession, but I think he’s a good talent."

Manu: Iheanacho can play for Real Madrid

Nigeria Flying Eagles coach Manu Garba has told AfricanFootball.com he is not surprised by Kelechi Iheanacho’s man-of-the match showing for Manchester City in Thursday morning's pre-season tie because the player is good enough to play for a bigger club like Real Madrid.

Nigeria U20 forward Iheanacho crowned a five-star display for Manchester City with a superb goal in a 4-1 pre-season win over Sporting Kansas City.

The Golden Ball winner at the 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup in UAE placed his first-time shot inside the near post with a left-footed strike from 20 yards out with an assist from Navas for the fourth and final goal of the match in the 88th minute.

Kansas City goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum denied Iheanacho twice in the first half and the Nigeria starlet was on till 90+2 minutes, when he paved way for Jason Denayer.

“I’m not surprised at all by what Iheanacho has shown because if given the chance, he can play for any team in the world like Real Madrid,” said Nigeria U20 coach Manu.

“He already has the technique to flourish at the highest level and the only thing the more established players at City could have over him is experience.”

Manu said Iheanacho’s biggest asset is his composure and clinical finishing around the box.

“At his age, his finishing around the box puts him in a class of his own. He scores five goals in a training. Once you give him the space and allow him to control the ball around the goal area, he could convert three of the five chances he gets. He is that good.”

The Flying Eagles coach told AfricanFootball.com he believes his performance against Kansas City will improve his self-belief.

“His performance (vs Kansas City) will give him even more confidence to step up his game,” he said.

Next month, the Flying Eagles will host Lesotho in a final African Youth Championship qualifier and coach manu said he expects Iheanacho to rejoin the team at least two weeks to the August 16 clash.

“We have asked City we need the player back with us at least two weeks before our qualifier, but if that is not possible, we could still have him a week before the game as long as he is playing regularly for his club,” said the coach.

Awoniyi inspires Flying Eagles to 5-0 win

Nigeria U20 team, the Flying Eagles, on Thursday stepped up their build-up for next month’s final Africa Youth Championship qualifier against Lesotho when they trounced Nigeria National League side Prisons FC of Abuja 5-0.

The Flying Eagles will host Lesotho on August 16 with the return leg a fortnight later in Maseru and the overall winners will advance to the 2015 AYC to be staged by Senegal in March.

Taiwo Awoniyi, fresh from a training stint in Sweden, grabbed a brace with Ifeanyi Matthew, Sulaiman Abdullahi, Chisom Eze and Segun Alebiosu also getting on the scoreboard.

The Nigeria U20s opened scoring after 12 minutes from the penalty spot when Awoniyi was fouled inside the box and Ifeanyi Matthew sent the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Awoniyi then fired his first goal on 26 minutes, when he crashed his effort from inside the box into the roof of the net.

The languid striker would have scored again in first half stoppage time, but he missed an easy chance.

Prisons best chance came in the 53rd minute, when Flying Eagles goalkeeper Joshua Enaholo parried a goal-bound effort for corner.

In the 69th minute, substitute Sulaiman Abdullahi scored the Flying Eagles third goal when he lobbed over the Prisons goalkeeper before he coolly finished off.

Prisons midfielder Ochule Paul was sent off in the 71st minute for dissent.

Substitutes Chisom Eze and Alebiosu crowned the victory with well-taken goals in the 73rd and 89th minutes, respectively.

Polish champions try out Flying Eagles striker

Flying Eagles striker Sulaiman Abdullahi is to undergo a two-week trial at Polish champions Legia Warzawa, his representatives have informed AfricanFootball.com “He is expected in Poland in the first week of August and he should meet up with this appointment as we hope to complete his travel papers within the next two weeks,” one of his representatives disclosed.

'Daddy' Abdullahi has shone through in his debut season in the Nigeria Premier League, scoring six goals for El Kanemi.

He is from the Kaduna-based Mutunci Academy, same as Flying Eagles winger Musa Yahaya, who has signed a pre-contract with English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.

No automatic F/Eagles shirt for Iheanacho warns Manu

Despite his eye-catching display for English Premier League champions Manchester City, Kelechi Iheanacho will not just walk into the starting XI of the Nigeria U20 team, according to coach Manu Garba.

Iheanacho, 17, scored to crown a superb Manchester City debut in a 4-1 pre-season win over Sporting Kansas City in the United States of America on Thursday.

Manu has said the MVP of the 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup is good enough to feature for European champions Real Madrid, but at the same time insisted he is not guaranteed a place in his star-studded youth team, when they host Lesotho in another AYC qualifier next month.

“Kelechi does not have an automatic shirt in my team. He has to come and prove himself in training before I can pick him,” Manu told AfricanFootball.com

“Besides there are equally other talented strikers in my team like Isaac Success, Alhassan Ibrahim ‘Muazam’, Taiwo Awoniyi. So, it will always the best who will make my team.”

True to his word, Manu benched the Manchester City starlet in both legs when the Flying Eagles recently dumped their Tanzanian counterparts in the qualifying series for the 2015 African Youth Championship in Senegal.

He was a 46th minute replacement for ‘Muazam’, when the Flying Eagles trounced Tanzania 4-1 in Kaduna, same as it was two weeks earlier in Dar es Salaam, when the Nigeria U20s won 2-0.

Spurs won't release Musa Yahaya for AYC tie

English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur will not release Flying Eagles forward Musa Yahaya for next month’s final 2015 African Youth Championship qualifier against Lesotho.

His agent Babawo Mohammed informed AfricanFootball.com Yahaya has been lined up for several test games with the Spurs Academy team around the August 15 clash against Lesotho and so will not be available for the crucial qualifier.

“Musa Yahaya has so far impressed in England with the Spurs Academy team, but he will not be available for the Flying Eagles next month because Spurs have arranged a couple of more matches for the player about the same time too,” Babawo disclosed.

“But the player could be available for the return leg match in Lesotho.”

The top star of last year’s FIFA U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates has been training now for several weeks with Spurs with whom he signed a pre-contract.

He featured for the Flying Eagles in the second round of the AYC qualifiers against Tanzania, where the Flying Eagles went through 6-1 on aggregate.

[b]AWONIYI FIRES HAT-TRICK, FLYING EAGLES WIN 8-0

Taiwo Awoniyi fired a hat-trick as the Flying Eagles
continued their preparations for the final AYC qualifier
against Lesotho with an 8-0 pounding of non-league
Basa United on Friday.

The Nigeria U20 team will host Lesotho on August 15
with the reverse tie in Maseru two weeks later.
The overall winners of this match-up will qualify for the
2015 AYC in Senegal in March.

Awoniyi hit target in the 8th, 20th and 24th minutes as
the Flying Eagles again ran up another big win.

But Enugu Rangers ace Obinna Nwobodo also shone in
midfield even though he did not get his name on the
scoreboard.

Awoniyi got going after just eight minutes when he
smashed home a superb shot.

Bernard Bulbwa doubled the advantage after 14 minutes,
before Awoniyi got his second goal in the 20th minute,
when he was set up by right back Ifeanyi Nweke.

Alhassan Ibrahim ‘Muazam’ should have made it 4-0
three minutes later, but he failed to do so from inside
the box

However, he then set up Awoniyi to complete his hat-
trick a minute later.

Muazam’s penalty was saved by the goalkeeper in the
26th minute and on the half hour mark, his clever chip
failed to find its mark.

Ifeanyi Matthew buried a fifth goal from the penalty spot
in the 59th minute after substitute Chisom Eze was
brought down inside the box.

Eze then got his own goal three minutes later after he
was put through by Abubakar Lawal.

Ifeanyi Ifeanyi headed a corner by Ifeanyi Matthew for the seventh goal on 72 minutes.

Wilfred Ndidi will complete the rout with a well-taken
shot in the 79th minute, before Wasiu Jimoh and Lawal
failed to convert begging chances in the closing
moments of the encounter.

AKINJIDE IDOWU REJOINS FLYING EAGLES

Defensive midfielder Akinjide Idowu has rejoined Nigeria U20 team, the Flying Eagles, after trials at Norwegian club Sogndal.

The trials lasted about two weeks.

Idowu trained Monday morning in Abuja with the Flying Eagles, who are preparing for a final African youth Championship qualifier against Lesotho later this month.

However, fellow Flying Eagles star Abdullahi Alfa is still trying out at the Norwegian club.

Idowu, who was part of the team who won a record fourth FIFA U17 World Cup last year in the United Arab Emirates, has also undergone trials in Sweden.

CLUBS CHASING IHEANACHO - MAN CITY
OFFICIAL

AfricanFootball.com can exclusively reveal today that besides MLS side New York City FC, Nigeria youngster Kelechi Iheanacho is wanted by several other clubs after he shone at Manchester City.

A source close to a top Manchester City official has informed only AfricanFootball.com that they are yet to decide on where the Nigeria U20 star should now go to on loan.

“Kelechi’s profile has shot up since what he achieved in pre-season in the United States of America,” the source said.

“As a result of this, many other clubs are keen to have him and Manchester City are expected to soon decide where he will go to on loan.

“New York City FC in the MLS is a possibility, but there are several other clubs who have come on board since after what he showed in America.” The source mentioned an opening in Belgium for the young forward, among other possibilities.

The MVP of the 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates scored thrice, which included converting his kick in a penalty shootout, during City’s pre-season training tour of the USA. He has yet to sign a professional contract as he can only do so when he turns 18 in October.

Chidiebere Nwakali is the other Nigeria youngster at City. He missed out on pre-season training with the EPL champions on account of a knee injury.

WASIU JIMOH FIRES 4 IN FLYING EAGLES BIG WIN

Wasiu Jimoh from the Kwara Football Academy plundered four goals as the Flying Eagles hammered Amakson Academy of Abuja 7-1 in a test match on Thursday.

Jimoh has been a fringe player in the Nigeria U20 team, but in the absence of some of the established stars ‘Baba Kwara’ grabbed his chance to make a big statement ahead of a final qualifier against Lesotho on August 16 in Kaduna. He opened scoring after 16 minutes when he jabbed home from a right cross by Ifeanyi Nweke.

He then made it 2-0 on 32 minutes with a longrange pile driver, before he completed his hat- trick in the 64th minute with yet another superb shot from distance. He grabbed his fourth goal in the 78th minute with yet another classy effort.

Amakson first appeared to be up for a fight because after 36 minutes their lively skipper Isaac Udoh pulled a goal back with the Flying Eagles then leading 2-0.

It was a sublime finish by the impressive Udoh as he went past two defenders before slotting beyond goalkeeper Olorunleke Ojo.

Thereafter, Taiwo Awoniyi and Sulaiman Abdullahi missed glaring chances, before Chisom Eze put the Nigeria U20 team 3-1 ahead on 62 minutes with a sweet finish.

After Jimoh fired his third and fourth goals, substitute Abubakar Lawal increased the tally to 6-1 after he was set up by Abdullahi.

The hard working Abdullahi completed the rout on the dot of 90 minutes from the penalty spot after Bernard Bulbwa was felled inside the box.

Flying Eagles vs Amakson Academy:

Olorunleke Ojo – Ifeanyi Nweke, Mustapha Abdullahi (Adebayor Ademuluwa 46), Wilfred Ndidi (Rowland Silas 88), Zaharadeen Bello – Ifeanyi Ifeanyi (Akinjide Idowu 46), Wasiu Jimoh (Clement Ogbobe Junior 80), Chisom Eze, Obinna Nwobodo (Bernard Bulbwa 76) – Taiwo Awoniyi (Abubakar Lawal 76), Sulaiman Abdullahi

FLYING EAGLES FACE LESOTHO MINUS
IHEANACHO, FOREIGN STARS

Manchester City starlet Kelechi Iheanacho and Spain-based striker Isaac Success will miss Nigeria’s 2015 AYC qualifier against Lesotho.

Flying Eagles coach Manu Garba further disclosed that Chidera Eze from FC Porto, Musa Yahaya of Tottenham Hotspurs as well as Dele Alampasu, who is training with Genk in Belgium, will equally not be available for the August 16 match in Kaduna.

“Kelechi (Iheanacho) was to have been released by Manchester City at least a week before the match, but the club’s recruitment officer has called us back to say they have plans for him and so he will no longer be available,” Manu told AfricanFootball.com

“Isaac Success will also not be released by Granada as he has begun playing for the first team.

“Tottenham Hotspur have said they will only release Musa Yahaya for the return leg match.

“But we can cope because we have an abundance of talent.

“For example, take the case of Wasiu Taiwo, who just scored four goals in a test game (against Amakson on Thursday). He has been on the fringes of the first team and took his chance with four well-taken goals.

“And so we have the players to get the result we need in the game against Lesotho.”

The Flying Eagles tackle their counterparts from Lesotho on August 16 in Kaduna with the second leg in Maseru a fortnight later.

The overall winners of this third round match-up will qualify for the tournament proper in Senegal in March 2015.

The full squad:

Defenders

MANU GARBA: GIVE IHEANACHO A CHANCE IN SUPER EAGLES

Flying Eagles coach Manu Garba has said Manchester City starlet Kelechi Iheanacho ought to be given a chance to feature for the Super Eagles.

Iheanacho has shone for English Premier League champions Manchester City in pre-season, just months after he was voted the best player at the 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

"The Super Eagles can give Kelechi (Iheanacho) a chance,” Manu told AfricanFootball.com

"He is a highly promising talent and Nigeria could really get a lot out of him even at this stage of his career.

“Personally, I believe he is more talented than most of the top stars at Manchester City, who are only more experienced than he is.”

Manu restated that above all Iheanacho is a top- class finisher around the box.

"I’m yet to see a player of his age who can score goals around the 18-yard box with such class and composure like he does,” he remarked.

"In training with the U17s, he often scores four, five goals. I’m therefore not surprised that more people are now talking about him.”

Iheanacho, who will only be 18 in October, impressed in training camp with the Nigeria ‘B’ yeam ahead of the 2014 CHAN in South Africa, but he would later opt out so as to pursue his dream to play for Manchester City.

Meanwhile, the support striker or attacking midfielder will not be available for Nigeria U20 team, the Flying Eagles, for a 2015 African Youth Championship qualifier against Lesotho on August 16 in Kaduna.

“City have plans for Kelechi and so he will not available for our match in Kaduna,” Flying Eagles handler Manu revealed.

Exactly. I agree especially as we do not have a real 10 in the super eagles and even if he plays as a 8 which is where I see him ending, we do not have any 8 who is better than him either. I wonder why he has not been given a chance. Same as Chuba Akpom.

Flying Eagles arrive Kaduna for Lesotho

Nigeria U20s, the Flying Eagles, arrived Kaduna Sunday afternoon after a short bus ride from Abuja ahead of a final 2015 AYC qualifier against Lesotho next weekend.

The squad of 25 players were led by coach Manu Garba.

Hosted

They are putting up at the African Continental Hotel in Kaduna, just as they did when they hosted Tanzania in the previous round of the AYC qualifiers.

The Flying Eagles will begin training on Monday at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna, where the qualifier against Lesotho will be played on Saturday.

The return leg match will be played a fortnight later in Maseru with the overall winners advancing to the 2015 AYC in Senegal in March.

Expected

Lesotho are expected later in the week in Kaduna.

- We are very much at home in Kaduna after we thrashed Tanzania 4-1 in the previous round, said defender Zaharadeen Bello.

- And we hope to again prove how much at home we are here with another convincing victory against Lesotho on Saturday.

Senegalese referees have been appointed for the match.
