Pure water business is one of Nigeria’s most rewarding business. It involves packaging of treated water in either sachet, bottle or refillable dispensers. With a good marketing/distribution strategy in place, and excellent packaging, the pure water business has proved a better investment than many other business options.
Start-up Requirements

The water business is capital intensive if you want to start all packaging options from the onset. In fact, the bottling option is what makes it so capital intensive. So, over the years, my advice to clients is to start first with the Sachet, run it for some time, and then incorporate the bottle at a convenient time. Anyway, here is the list of requirements for establishing a water packaging factory.

1. Business Plan: What you are reading right now is essentially a guide, hence, does not rule out the need for a comprehensive feasibility study. As a rule of thumb, never venture into any business without first studying a comprehensive feasibility study. Although, I will list the approximate costs for each of the start-up necessities, a business plan goes a little further to throw more light on so many other important considerations for your business such as: the executive summary, staffing requirements, projected cashflow, profit & loss as well as balance sheet, SWOT analysis, and important ratios like the Pay Back Period, Break Even analysis, etc.

Apart from being a good planning tool, this business plan is a requirement for securing loans from the banks, or for convincing investors/partners on the suitability of the business.

2. Incorporation: The incorporation of your water factory is two-fold: one with CAC for the business name, and the other has to do with trademark registration.

3. Factory: Your water packaging factory should be sited on a plot of land (if it’s only sachet water you intend running), or on a minimum of two plots if you want both sachet and bottle packaging. A 3-bedroom bungalow is the minimum requirement to start a sachet water factory. The rooms will serve as finished product room, production room, raw material store, and a cloak room. You need to construct the bungalow that will serve as your factory surrounded by a fence, and with a borehole, and interlocking tile floor. The factory must not be used for residential purposes, and its planning and construction need to be supervised by a professional water consultant.

4. Treatment/Packaging Plant: Water is first treated before it’s packaged. This makes for two kinds of equipments: the treatment (or filtration) system, as well as a packaging machine/plant. The treatment plant is one and same for both sachet and bottled water, except for a slight difference. But, the packaging machine is separate and different. That for sachet, commonly called form-fill-seal machine, is a standalone unit, a little bigger than the large-sized fridge. But, the one for bottled water is a big plant made up of several units starting from the Blowing Unit and ending at the Shrink-wrapping unit.

5. Electric Generator: Your factory cannot rely on the epileptic power supply from PHCN, hence the need for an electric generator. The sachet plant requires a 12 KVA generator, whereas the incorporating bottling plant requires up to 50KVA.

6. Supply Truck: Marketing the products is the most important aspect of your business, because that is the channel for getting your product sold to the consumers. A Toyota Dyna truck is the preferred vehicle for transporting the finished products out of your factory. One of such truck will do for a start, but the recommended will be two. Do not be economical in your budget when it comes to supply truck. You know the condition of Nigerian roads and in most cases, you will be going deep into the developing areas to supply. There is nothing as bad as buying a truck that breaks down so frequent, it can eat up the profit from your business.
