What's the big Deal in Ghana or any country beating Mauritius? Mauritius currently has no football pedigree despite having loads of lush green pitches all over the country. I know cos I lived in Mauritius and played against some of their best club sides and was on the winning side a lot of times. So, there's no biggie in their team. They're just average at best and always wear out as the game progresses.

Torino FC have signed Ghana midfielder Afriyie Acquah on a four-year deal from German side TSG Hoffenheim, the Serie A outfit announced on their website on Friday.

The box-to-box midfielder joined Hoffenhaim in 2013 from Palermo but failed to command a starting role and was loaned to Parma in 2014, where he spent one and a half seasons before moving to Sampdoria also on loan last February.

“Torino Football Club is delighted to announce that it has acquired the right of Ghanaian Afriyie Acquah from Hoffenheim FC until 2019,” the club said.

The financial details of the contract have not been disclosed.

According to reports, Torino chairman Urban Cairo and coach Giampiero Ventura are great admirers of the former Bechem United player after keeping a close eye on him while at Parma and Sampdoria during the 2014-15 season.

Acquah was part of the Ghana squad that won silver at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations held in Equatorial Guinea in January. His missed kick in the penalty shootout in the final was the turning point for Cote D’Ivoire, who eventually emerged as winners.

Acquah played 24 Serie A games with Parma and Sampdoria, starting 22 times and scoring once. He will become the second Ghanaian player at the Stadio Olimpico after youngster Emmanuel Gyasi returned from his loan at Lega Pro side Montova.

Uganda Cranes begin the ‘Road to Russia 2018’ with a daunting trip to Tamale where they visit Ghana in a group D encounter on Friday.

Buoyed by the recent qualification for Africa Nations Cup finals for the first time in 39 years, the Cranes go into the game against the Black Stars confident.

Iceland based midfielder Tonny Mawejje, scorer of Uganda’s only goal the last time Uganda visited Ghana believes it’s an achievable dream to qualify for the World’s biggest football tournament but first, they have to DEAL with each game as it comes.

“When you look at the qualification, we don’t play different teams from those we face in AFCON qualifiers,” he argues. “It’s the same teams and that gives us courage and hope that if we do work hard and together as a team, we can achieve the dream,” he added.

On Tuesday, Atakora Lalawele’s lone strike condemned the Cranes to a 1-0 loss to Togo in an international friendly but Cranes Coach Mulitin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic picked positives.

“We played one good team but friendly match is different from main match,” he stated. “We had three strategic targets. We succeeded in getting two of these targets. We want to improve what was wrong heading to Tamale,” he added.

Meanwhile, Ghana Coach, Avram Grant admits it will be a tough game against The Cranes who have lost just once in the last six competitive meetings between the two sides but says his side have the quality to win the game.

“I don’t think it will be an easy game but our target is same, to win and do everything to be in Russia,” he said. “We are playing against a very strong side but we have the quality to overcome them. The most important thing is we finish first in the group,” he added.

Team News

Ghana Black Stars have a clean bill of health ahead of the duel with all foreign based players in camp and landed in Tamale on Wednesday for final preparations.

But they are without the injured of Juventus midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah and striker Andre Dede Ayew who were not considered.

Captain Asamoah Gyan who made a return from INJURY has reportedly been assertive in training and convincing about his return to form and thus, remains a big puzzle for Grant on whether to start him or not.

Man to Watch - Mubarak Wakaso

The Panathiakos man has grown into one of Ghana’s favourites attacking midfielders and must be keenly watched.

Aggressive, good on and off the ball and a dead ball expert as well so Cranes must not give away free kicks near the area.

Uganda Cranes’ goalie Denis Onyango who missed the 1-0 loss to Togo trained with the rest of his teammates on Wednesday before the team left for Accra from Lome by road.

The 19 man squad is all safe and sound and is expected to feel the turf at Tamale on Thursday evening.

Hamis ‘Diego’ Kiiza and Geoffrey ‘Baba’ Kizito are all back in contention after missing the Comoros tie while Denis Iguma also returns.

The defender missed the game against Comoros due to suspension and it remains to be seen whether he walk straight into the team after an impressive show by Nicholas Wadada.

Man to Watch – Farouk Miya

The Standard Liege man has of recent become Uganda’s most threatening player going forward. He is daring, aggressive and has a heart of lion. Always in right places at right time and will love to add to his tally of three goals already in the campaign.

What you need to know

Ghana beat lowly ranked Comoros 2-0 on aggregate to reach this stage while Uganda eliminated Togo 4-0.
The last time Ghana beat Uganda was on September 04, 2005 in the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The game ended 2-0 and the Black Stars went on to qualify for Germany 2006.
Since 2002, the two teams have met 7 times (including friendly). Ghana have won twice as many Uganda while the rest have been stalemates.
Overall, the two nations have met 12 times. Ghana hold advantage with 6 wins, 3 losses and 3 draws.
Ghana has played at three World Cup finals (2006, 2010 and 2014) while Uganda have never played at the finals.
Besides Uganda and Ghana, the other members in the group are Egypt and Congo Brazzaville.

Probable Line ups

Ghana XI: Razak Braimah (GK), Harrison Afful, Jonathan Mensah, John Boye, Baba Rahman, Emmanuel Agyemang Badu, Mubarak Wakaso, Christian Atsu, Afriyie Acquah, Asamoah Gyan and Jordan Ayew

Uganda XI:Denis Masinde Onyango (GK), Denis Guma, Joseph Ochaya, Isaac Isinde, Murushid Jjuuko, Aucho Khalid, Tonny Mawejje, Geoffrey ‘Baba’ Kizito, Geoffrey Massa ©, Farouk Miya and William Luwagga Kizito.

Prediction

Besides Ghana’s pedigree, there is little to separate between the two sides. However, Ghana and the giants take the World Cup more important as compared as other competitions.

With home advantage, I see the Black Stars carrying the day but with a slim victory.

Ghana 1-0 Uganda

Ghana president John Dramani Mahama has hailed the leadership qualities of Asamoah Gyan as he draws an analogy in seeking for a second re-election bid.

The Ghanaian leader is facing stiff competition from popular opposition leader Nana Akufo-Addo.

John Mahama has been campaigning in his native country ahead of the crucial elections on December 7.

He says he is tested like the former Sunderland hitman and urges voters to keep him in power.

"When the likes of Asamoah Gyan and Abedi Pele are playing, spectators and analysts always criticise and suggest that given the opportunity, they will play better. But when you field him, they give off a lethargic display, he said to the cheering NDC supporters.

"We are winning and you want Dede Ayew and Asamoah Gyan to be substituted so a rookie can play, it does not make sense, he quipped.

"Talking is the easy part. Even a child can do that but if you have not been tried and tested you cannot deliver, he jabbeb.

President Mahama will square off with his main challenger Nana Akufo-Addo for a shot at the presidency on December 7.

The election is expected to be keenly contested with political watchers predicting a potential run-off.

On his third cap for the Black Stars of Ghana on July 3, 2004 in Kampala, Asamoah Gyan scored a late equalizers to force the draw with Uganda in the 2006 World Cup qualifiers.

Both sides have met four other times, seven goals have been scored in those matches, five of those goals scored by Ghana but none by Gyan.

And he hasn’t scored for Ghana in a while but the striker is the record goal scorer of the West African country with 48 goals in 95 games.

When asked by the journalists on Wednesday whether fans should expect a goal from him against Uganda, the former Sunderland striker declined to put himself in the firing line.

As a striker anybody will expect you to score, I always try to give my best to help the team win. If I can score and the team wins I will be happy

Gyan said before commenting on the sorry state of the Tamale Sports Stadium where the game will be played on Friday afternoon.

It’s quiet difficult to talk about a pitch, we just need to forget about it and play, it’s not in the best shape as we want it but we will try our best.

Ghana skipper Asamoah Gyan and his deputy Andrew Ayew, the latter is injured and ruled out of the tie agaisnt Uganda on Friday

Players like Joseph Ochaya have plied their trade before in Ghana with Asante Kotoko and the left back currently with the Cranes has talked about the hot weather in the northern part of Ghana.

Gyan who just like most of his teammates are foreign based are expected to struggle since it’s relatively hot currently in the city but again the 30 year old striker downplayed the issue.

It’s gonna be very difficult for us, but it’s not the first time we shall play in these conditions. Whether hot or not, it’s not the first time we play under these conditions

The Al-Ahli Dubai F.C player said about the ground before sharing the importance of the fans towards the team and their ambitions to qualify for their fourth straight World Cup.

We are playing at home and we don’t want to disappoint fans who will be behind us, we are not here to disappoint the fans. Fans always play a very important role in the game, we are expecting more fans on Friday because they are part of us and we expect them to come in big numbers like they have done before

Uganda, Ghana, Congo Brazzaville and Egypt are drawn in Group D with the winner making it to the global showpiece in Russia in 2018.

Goalkeeper Razak Brimah will get the nod with the back four of Harrison Afful, Baba Rahman, Jonathan Mensah, John Boye giving him cover.

Torino star Afriyie Acquah will play in the defensive midfield role and support from Mubarak Wakaso.

Newcastle United star Christian Atsu will cut in from the right flank and Frank Acheampong.

Grant will field a two-proned attack with Asamoah Gyan and Jordan Ayew.

Ghana's probable starting line-up: Razak Brimah- Harrison Afful, Baba Rahman, Jonathan Mensah, John Boye- Afriyie Acquah, Christian Atsu, Mubarak Wakaso, Frank Acheampong- Asamoah Gyan and Jordan Ayew.

The Black Stars coach wants his team to open the group stage of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers with a win

Ghana coach Avram Grant says his side's desire to play at the 2018 Fifa World Cup final will spur them on to victory over Uganda in their qualifying encounter on Friday.

The Black Stars host the Cranes at the Tamale Sports Stadium in the last round group opener, ahead of matches against Egypt and Congo.

Ghana are gunning for a fourth straight appearance at the global showpiece after outings in 2006, 2010 and 2014.

“I know the results of the last [2015 Afcon] qualifiier against Uganda when we lost away and drew at home," Grant is quoted as saying by 3News.

“They are a very good side, but we also want to show that we are very strong.

"I don’t think it will be an easy game, but our target is the same - to win and to do everything to be in Russia [2018].

‘‘It's a group stage, so it’s most important that we finish first in the group. It is a tough group in which all the teams can qualify but we have our own vision - we want to be there.

“Part of the reason why I came here is to understand why the talent of the team has not matched their achievement.

"First, we have to get there and I am convinced we would start well on Friday."

Ghana dispatched Comoros 2-0 on aggregate to reach the third and final round.

The Business Manager of former Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan has confirmed the Black Stars captain has held talks with the top hierarchy of former club Liberty Professionals to BUY majority stake.

GHANASoccernet.com reported on Thursday that the Al Ahli star was on the verge of acquiring majority shares in the financially-stricken Dansoman based club, and Samuel Anim-Addo has moved quickly to confirm the report.

The striker who started his career with the Scientific soccer lads is worried about the current unimpressive state as the club have been suffocating under financial stress since demise of founder and bank roller Alhaji Sly Tetteh.

Gyan came to the rescue of Liberty at the tail end of just ended season to SAVE them from suffering relegation.

He paid the winning BONUS and salaries of players ahead of final match which they won to salvage topflight status.

According to Anim Addo talks has been held but a deal is yet to be reached both parties.

''I can confirm that we are in talks for major stake in Liberty but it is far from being done deal yet,'' Addo told the state-owned Graphic Sports.

''Liberty is close to Gyan’s heart and he wants to invest in the club which gave him the platform to reach the heights he has attained as well as ensure the dreams of and Liberty’s founder, Alhaji Sly Tetteh, are sustained. It’s also his way of honouring his mentor and keeping his legacy.

''Both before the DEAL can go though, Gyan needs the blessing of Alhaji Sly Tetteh’s family.''

Ugandans are confident the Cranes can have a shot at shocking Ghana should they approach the game with attacking intent.

Newspapers in the East African country want the team to attack rather than rely on sit back and hit opponent on the break set up used by teams playing away from home.

The Cranes have never been goal shy against Ghana, scoring in their last three games against the Black Stars.

The team is in good mood to dent Black Stars hopes of making a fourth successive appearance at the World Cup finals after securing a place at Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in 39 years.

Black Stars are favourites- Uganda coach Milutin Sredojevic
Published on: 07 October 2016

Uganda coach Milutin Sredojevic admits his side are the underdogs against Ghana in their Group E World Cup qualifier in Tamale.

The Serb believes the Black Stars pedigree as three-time World Cup finalists make them a strong force.

''We are in a football country that the best identity cards is going to the World Cup three times already, they have a culture to qualify to the World Cup,'' Sredojevic said.

''It is not easy to come here and play against very good individuals that are playing like a team.

''However we have a different mission, Ghana want to make it another World Cup for us we having the believe and dream that we can develop our team and show Africa that it is not by ACCIDENT that we qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations.''

The Cranes are still basking in their first Africa Cup of Nations qualification in more than three decades and hope they could surprise their hosts.
