[left][b]THE UNIVERSITY EDUCATION IN NIGERIA[b][left] It might interest every interested person to know that the university education in Nigeria is in a fascinating stage. [left]Education is the key, education is priceless, it remains the engine power of any nation. It is a facet connected to every peripheral facet. The importance of education can not be over emphasized. In this light; it is an uthmost task for a nation to make its citizens educated.[left] Nigeria as a case study; Nigeria which is the most populous balack nation in the world and currently the largest economy in Africa, in my perception; wouldn't have achieved this feet if there wasn't education in the country. The question is how effective is it or is it not? [left]Education is divided into stages with the popular adoption of 6, 3, 3, 4 pattern in Nigeria, and emphassy being on "the university education"; in respect to observing its mode, progress and their general impact to the society. The first universit came into Nigeria in 1955, but officially opened on 7th october 1960; this is the "university of Nigeria, NSUKKA". Prior to its establishment, the educated Nigerians then had schooled abroad. Years ran out and many universities sprang up in Nigeria. Today, there exist more than 100 universities in Nigeria; private, state and federal universities all together.[left] The university is an encyclopaedia of knowledge comprising persons of various kinds, studying differ and various courses/disciplines to gain qualification in that field. So, what is the true state of Nigerian universities? Are they fulfilling this objective? We'll know! Perhaps, Nigerian universities are making progress, but not without falls. There are a lot of challenges facing these academic institutions today; the first and most obvious is the inceasant academic union(ASUU) strike; this frequently interrupts smooth learning. On the other hand, structures are dilapidated, students don't learn in conducive evironment anymore. Moving also to the issue of cultism; these so called cultists harrass innocent students, thereby constituting psychological fear and consequent insecurity on them, and this could reduce the students' learning zeal. More so, campus prostitution is now a trent among the female students; they are now more concentrated in prostitution than academics; I know you know they can't excel academically. [left]These and so many other odds has painted the Nigerian universities in bad light; employerpr now adopt rigorous methods of recruitment to the the extent of organising tests/exams to prove the efficiency of students; this is because they do not trust the graduates, and yes sincerely; some graduates are half baked.[left] However, the university education in Nigeria has made progress. Some ever zealous students, irrespective of the harsh conditions exposed to, still strive to excel beyond their equals. The classrooms are usually filled up at nights by enthusiastic students who are determined and bent on making a difference. They excel, not just locally, but internationally. Thank you!
