Nigeria....my nigeria why do we fight and compare to be divided -B.sc vs HND -Hausa vs Ibo vs Yoruba -soldiers vs police -private universities vs government universities -PDP vs APC vs ETC -Garri vs Semo now doctors vs JOHESU I believe every career life has its uniqueness.we should learn to develop our career self esteem rather than fighting for positions, money and living in envy.An engineer will remain an engineer to a doctor and vice versa,so it applies to other professions. At this time in Nigeria,we have more important problem than this, this people(NMA and JOHESU) should come together and work toward improving their practice in the country and how they will make the healthcare better. Research institutions, career specialization institutes and centers which are absent in the country would have just been a good option for other professions in the healthcare sector A lot of things are just wrong in Nigeria. we need an holistic evaluation of everything in the country but in the mean time, let the doctors and the JOHESU lay down their prides and lets save Nigeria's today and tomorrow God bless Nigeria 1 Like |

Djtm: They are just pissing me off!!! Wtf? Our government is a very useless one for this sort of crap to be going on! What's their own concern about how much other specialists are paid? As long as you're paid what you're worth, you shouldn't care about what others earn. If a programmer has worked for a certain number of years, has so much experience under his belt, he has the right to become a consultant programmer. IMO, doctors are overhyped in Nigeria. Well, our leaders do not give a sh1t, so people can continue to die as long as they can afford to go abroad once they have a slight headache.you don't seems to understand the isssue; nobody is against any health worker becoming a SPECIALIST and earning a SPECIALIST ALLOWANCE but the title CONSULTANT as used in nigerian hospitals today is the problem. A hospital CONSULTANT is a medical doctor who after his undergraduate medical training enroll for a post-graduate residency training for a minimun of 5 years depending on the specialty to specialise in one aspect of medicine. This broad and deep knowledg and skills confers some level of responsibility on him; he takes FINAL decision concerning patient management in his specialty. The training he undergo is supervised and regulated by an agency of government; national post graduate medical college and the certificate recognize by MDCN. The scheme of service for medical doctors also recognizes this title: house officer, registrar.................. consultant special grade 1. The FG decided to ward this title to people with no criteria, no agency responsible for training, without CLEAR CUT JOB DESCRIPTION. This will only bring anarchy to the system as those so appointed will give to themselves the position and responsibilities of CONSULTANT MEDICAL DOCTOR. 3 Likes |

Docs are trying? I agree. But the fact that they are now to be referred to as small gods is what I don't really get. Even in the yeye article, the lame writer was talking about sacrificing new born babies just because they(docs) want increament, whereas if na Nigerian govt try that one we go dey call them different kind of name, especially if na chibok. My humble contribution is this: Docs fight for your money and stop being egoistic, 'cos telling new born babies to go to hell is just too illogical. |

It's much easier to argue for or against Doctors on this faceless forum so I wouldn't start by doing so. Rather, I'll start by helping us to see the bigger picture. When you look at the earnings of the most irrelevant sector of our society ( i.e. the political class ), then you'll start to understand the real issues here.. I stand to be corrected if wrong but as I write, ASUP is still on strike... I can bet that if all other unions could wield as much power as ASUU, NMA, JOHESU and NUPENG, they'll try their luck afterall, who wouldn't love a bigger slice of the National Cake? Every interest group is just concerned about having a larger share of the National cake.. Until, we speak with one voice as citizens and prevail on Government to reduce the cost of governance, we'll continue to experience one senseless strike after another, all for a larger slice of the cake after all, if one group even earns a "Bleep..g" allowance for producing nothing but chaos and constantly "heating the polity..." why shouldn't other groups get more... let alone those who "save lives..." Back to the Doctors... I've read comments like "we spend 6 or more years in school, others spend 4 years and so on..." Hey, na by force? Such is a reflection of the "I better pass my neighbor mentality," in our society, otherwise, no Doctor should have no preferential treatment over any other professional because the last time I checked, Doctor's need nurses, pharmacists, laboratory technicians, soldiers, policemen, accountants, engineers, lawyers, artisans, mechanics, cleaners just as we all need Doctors so what the heck is really going on here!!! The average Nigerian Doctor is arrogant because Society has made him/her believe he/she is superior to others and that is also evident in the nature of their demands ... ! Ironically, the private hospitals are mostly owned by the mid-level to senior Doctors in the Govt. Hospitals who won't allow Govt. hospitals function as effectively as they should because of their own private interests... There is no sector of society that is functioning as it should and as such, everybody should go on strike until the political class lives up to its responsibility and does the needful towards making the society better... this won't happen, at least not overnight. Until that happens, we just must that accept that indeed the small gods (i.e. doctors) are crazy but the bigger gods (the government) are crazier! The biggest gods (you and I) who allow our country to run by mediocre people remain the craziest of all... We are all at the mercy of the small crazy consultant gods... 6 Likes |

I have always been against incessant strikes by labour unions but since most Nlanders supported ASUU strike (for whatever reason), they should also support doctors strike. What is good for the goose should also be good for the gander. Meanwhile, do we really need a "CONSULTANT" nurse/medical radiographer/lab technician/lab scientist/pharmacists/cleaner in the hospital? How many Nlanders who are rich enough to establish standard hospital would require the services of one such "CONSULTANTS"? Which of the ills affecting the Nigerian health care system can we attribute to absence of the above "consultants"? The creation of such "consultants" would not in any way improve the healthcare delivery system. In fact, it will create chaos and confusion in the system. However, I agree with the submission that doctors and other health professionals should leave the management/day-day running of the hospital for experts in this areas. Doctors and other healthcare professionals should concentrate on patient care and training of students. Currently, we'r losing so many well trained doctors to administrative roles in the hospitals. Bottomline, some of the doctors demands are germane while others are mere shadow chasing or at best efforts at maintaining territorial control. But a society that tolerates the excesses of ASUU and other labour unions should tolerate that of doctors. |

It pains me as a doctor to be saying this, but i think our problem is that we have allowed JOHESU to brainwash the public. Most people support JOHESU because they see us as oppressors. So many people here are commenting on issues they know nothing about. We are NOT gods_ we are just like any other employee, protesting unfair advantage given to others in the health sector. We went on strike January 6 2014, we called it off when Nigerians pleaded, & the FG promised things. They did not. By June, we did a WARNING STRIKE, yet nothing. And some are saying negotiations are better than strike - negotiate till when ? ASUU were on strike for almost a year. . .people were lambasting FG. ASUP is still on strike.. . . . . . . . . . . . . .people are lambasting FG. Why is everyone attacking us now ? Pharmacists, lab guys, nurses etc are being appointed directors in Teaching Hospitals. Good. And yet, they say FG should abolish the post of Deputy CMAC, THAT THEY DON'T DO ANYTHING. why ? In a hospital, the doctor is the head [ its the truth, lets not confuse the public ]. it doesn't make us gods. In a home, the father is the head, [ irrespective of salary size ] it doesn't make him a god. In the University, only Profs can aspire to head as VC. . . A man who became professor 5 yrs ago, can contest.. . . . a grade 1 lecturer who has been there for 20 yrs cannot. This is just the way it is. Patients come to hospital, to see a doctor. The doctor prescribes drugs which a pharmacist may/may not want to edit. The doctor recommends lab tests for a patient, which he/she goes to meet the technician's input. The doctor outlines patients care for nurses to carry out. Now. . . . there's a strike . . . . . everywhere is empty. Strikes are not good, but we have been pushed to the wall. Doctors feed, we queue at petrol stations, we train our kids at school, WE ALSO FALL SICK. We are not asking for heaven and earth. We are asking for our due. 10 Likes 1 Share |

smithoo: Federal Govt and the state Govt should just terminate the employments of all striking doctors and pay everyone off. They should start fresh recruitment to fill these vacancies with good but strict condition of service. NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE. It might take a long time to fill those vacancies but at the end those vacancies will be filled. Being a medical doctor does not make you a good administrator. All our health institutions are been headed by medical doctors and most are in shambles. These people must be humbled else they will hold this nation to ransom. People lifes have been lost due this strike, can they bring those lifes back after the strike is called off. Terminate them and let see if some will not shift ground and begged to be recalled. LAGOS STATE under once tried it but it was resolved amicably. This time let it be total. You don't even understand what you are saying. Sack everyone. Where do you think the specialist will come from or you think they are in the market. 1 Like |

maclatunji: I do not blame the doctors, I blame the country's leadership. Policies are meant to guide the government on these issues, why should it allow itself be pushed around by healthcare workers from doctors to cleaners if it indeed knows what it is doing?spot on; never grant any union's demands in isolation but federal ministry of health keeps issueing circulars full of confusion. for example following threats by JOHESU the FMOH issued a circular last month for placement of medical lab. scientist pupils/interns at a salary level equal to that of a lab. scientist that has just joined the service after NYSC. ALL the federal hospitals are presently having difficulty inplementing this circular, when one of the MDs asked a minitry official the reply was " it is not meant to be inplemented but issued just to doused tension" |

7sperovs:I understand your frustration Officer, may God protect you guys. You should understand your peculiarities; you signed not to embark on any strike doctors never signed such agreements. If you understand medical practice very well no medical doctor send any patient for TEST without CLINICAL DIAGNOSIS. This is what many people dnt known, check any laboratory request form and you will column for that. In many instances you can treat patients on the basis of clinical diagnosis without sending them to the lab and dont forget MANY diseases are diagnose CLINICALLY ONLY. 1 Like |

To strike or not to strike? Any two sides at loggerheads would always have reasons which seemingly justify their actions. Our nation is faced with numerous problems we all know require urgent intervention. Why we choose to make each other suffer by leveraging on the little 'power' we seem to have is what I don't get. Why can't we stand as one and address our issues without punishing the helpless in our midst? Is this how the developed nations attained their present status? Must we look down on one another? When the curtain falls for each of us, doctor or tomato seller, does it all then matter? Where is our humanity? What happened to service to our fellow man? Learning obviously hasn't helped us as a people. We need to stop squabbling and imbibe love for one another and for our nation. Together. We need to get smart and realise our common foe. Then will we begin to speak with one voice against the ills in this country and begin to build the future we seek. Together. 1 Like |
