In a bid to encourage Nigerians in awakening reading habit, a non governmental organisation, KO READERS ‘R’ LEADERS, is organising an awareness walk, tagged: ‘Destiny Walk’ which holds at Rowe Park, Yaba, in Lagos State, on Saturday, July 12, 2014,

The convener of the group, the General Manager, Consumer Marketing, MTN, Kola Oyeyemi, said the awareness was prompted by the increase percentage of mass failure in different national examinations.

“The ‘Destiny Walk’ is seen, as a step in the right direction. Recently, cases have been made for such projects, especially in the face of mass failure recorded in the school certificate examinations. The walk, therefore, is a reinforcement of our tacit and collective resolve that something needs to be done urgently.”

Considering the diminishing reading culture among Nigerian youths and teenagers, he said: “We can no longer take for granted the risk we run if we allow the status quo to remain. This is because only readers can lead and our future leaders are already exhibiting apathy to knowledge acquisition by not reading.”

He reminisced that the country was known for production of intellectuals: “Nigerian intellectuals used to be the brides of the Western world because of their high intellectual capacity, but what we have currently are students and artisans who can hardly compete favourably locally let alone on the global platform,” he stated.

Driving the message on the imperative of reviving the reading culture, he said the country might end up producing unemployable graduates, who are shallow-minded and worse, mediocre leaders. “This will ultimately affect the nation’s growth and keep it on the high end of the under-developed nations’ index,” Oyeyemi said.

The walk, which will also include eminent Nigerians, philanthropists, musicians and comedians, including Ben Bruce, Joke Silva, Emem Isong, Ali Baba, Tee A, Joseph Benjamin, Praise Adejo (Praiz) and Chidinma Ekile (aka Chidinma).

Mr Oyeniyi advised the populace not depend on government to revive the reading culture but to put more efforts.
