As a result of an impressive outing by the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the just concluded 2014 World Cup hosted in Brazil, the Super Eagles were rewarded by moving up 10 places according to the July edition of the monthly FIFA/Coca-Cola ranking. The move-up makes Nigeria the 3rd best in Africa behind Algeria and Côte d’Ivoire who both dropped 2 places down to finish in the 24th and 25th position respectively. Egypt remained the 4th best team in the continent while Ghana moved a place down to be 38th in the world and 5th in Africa.

Unsurprisingly, the world champions – Germany who were undefeated through out the tournament are ranked 1st (first time in 20 years) while runners up Argentina moved 3 places up to sit at the 2nd spot. Amazing Netherlands who won the third-place match against host Brazil occupy the 3rd spot going up 12 places while Colombia is 4th in the world.

Former world champions, England, Spain and Italy who had a disappointing tournament by crashing out at the first round all sank at the latest ranking. England dropped 10 places to move to the 20th spot – their lowest since May 1996. Dethroned world champion, Spain also moved from the 1st position they occupied before the tournament to 8th while Italy were displaced from the first 10 by going 5 places down to occupy the 14th position.
