Are You Asthmatic? These Are Ways To Control The Ailment By Avoiding Attacks. by sofadj(m): 3:53pm On Jul 23, 2014 |
Asthma is a chronic (lasting for a long period) disease of the airway . The airway is the path through which air flows in and out of the lungs (the major respiratory organ) A person suffering from this condition is known as an Asthmatic. Asthma is characterized by recurrent attacks of difficulty in breathing and abnormal/noisy breathing which vary in severity and frequency from person to person. SYMPTOMS 1. Wheezing : abnormal sound produced while breathing 2. Chest Tightness 3. Breathing Difficulty / Shortness of breath 4. Cough Symptoms may occur several times a day/week and often at night. The airway is hyper-responsive in ASTHMATIC persons, thus there is a more aggressive response to minimal quantity of irritants which would normally not cause a response in a NON-ASTHMATIC. Things that make allergies or asthma worse are known as triggers Triggers Tobacco Smoke Chemical irritants in workplace, strong odours Indoor allergens (house dust mites in beddings, carpets, stuffed furniture) Air pollution Respiratory infections Other triggers include: Cold air Physical stress(exercise) Emotional stress (fear, anger) Drugs such as Aspirin, Propanolol Treatment Asthma has no known cure. However appropriate management can enable an Asthmatic to live a good quality life. Management involves Use of Short term acting drugs to relieve symptoms Use of Long term acting drugs to prevent attack Careful lifestyle modifications to prevent exposure to triggers Indoor triggers House dust mites are very tiny insects that can’t be seen with the naked eye. They are very common as triggers for asthma. Mostly found in beddings, mattresses, clothings and fabrics. Tiny molds, pollens and detergents are also common triggers. To limit exposure to indoor triggers, Get rid of fabric furniture and replace with Wood, Leather or Vinyl Avoid sleeping on cushions and cloth-covered furniture Wrap mattresses with mite-proof covers Wash beddings and pillows frequently in hot water Keep indoor air dry ( Dehumidifier) Use a central Air Conditioner/Heater to control air Protect airway with a mask when cleaning house Wipe dust using a damp duster OTHERS Avoid Physical stress Avoid cold air Avoid using products with strong odors Follow your Physician’s guide and treatment plan.
