While Germany and Argentina were fighting to win the World Cup, Twitter and Facebook had their own battle for social supremacy during the sport event. This competition is stretching beyond the final, because the social networks are still releasing statistics on how the World Cup was among their users. According to the latest data from Twitter, there were 672 million related tweets sent during the competition.

Although this is the highest number of tweets made during one event, it should be taken into account that the World Cup lasted 32 days, while Super Bowl was just a single-game event, Oscars – a one-night event, and Olympics – 16 days.

Twitter reveals that the most popular match on Twitter was Germany’s 7-1 victory over Brazil: it sparked over 35 million tweets, which is even more than the final’s 32 million. On the other hand, the final game was the World Cup’s biggest moment, which generated over 618,000 tweets per minute. In the meantime, the team’s 5th goal against Brazil in the semi-final sparked the 580,000 tweets per minute.

Information from Twitter also revealed that the Brazilian star Neymar Jr was the most-mentioned player during the event, followed by Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Urugay’s Luis Suarez. Apparently, Suarez was mentioned more due to his infamous biting episode rather than his professional skills.

As for Facebook, the company has announced that 88 million people published over 280 million posts, comments and likes on the network during the World Cup final, which beat its previous record of 245 million set by the Super Bowl last year.

Both social networks have been keen to flag up the use of their applications by players during the tournament – for example, Mario Götze on Instagram and Wayne Rooney apologizing to England fans on Facebook, or Rihanna’s new sideline as a Twitter pundit were mentioned.
