Tobi Before His Untimely Death

Family members of Mr. Raheem Akinfolayemi Badmus are now demanding for justice over the death of their son, Mohammed Oluwatobi Badmus, who died shortly after being allegedly tortured by men of the Nigeria Police at Akure B Division in Ondo State.

DailyPost had reported earlier that the deceased was arrested by police after he was accused of stealing a Nokia Phone from one Prophet identified as Bisi in Akure.

Already, the father of the deceased, who is a public analyst, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police [IGP] over the death of his son.

However, there is now more fact on how late Tobi was allegedly tortured to death by the Security Operatives on July 21, 2014.

Speaking with DailyPost, the elder sister of the deceased, who claimed that she witnessed the torture of her brother by the police said he was filled with life and expectations before he met his untimely death.

According to her, “Tobi was alleged to have stolen a Nokia phone from a nearby church within their neighbourhood by one Prophet Bisi.” .Prophet Bisi called me and said Tobi stole a Nokia phone from his church. When I heard about the allegation, I called Tobi on his mobile line and demanded he comes to the church to meet us. He volunteered he would join us.

“But Prophet Bisi was impatient; he demanded we go and meet him. I accepted and joined him in his car to drive to meet Tobi. Before we got to Tobi, we met his uncle; Mr Sola Oke who brought out the phone, immediately Prophet Bisi claimed it was the missing Nokia phone. Shortly, Tobi arrived but said the phone was not a stolen phone and could not have been the one missing.

“At that point, Tobi said since the matter has been reported to the police, he would want the matter resolved at the police station. And off they drove to the Oke Aro B division in Akure”

Speaking further, Sola said at the police station while standing outside, she saw three police officers; Mr Ade Awodeyi and two others, discussing with the Prophet.

“I later learnt that the case was reported to Mr Ade earlier but I didn’t know the content of their discussion. I only heard from one of the police officers at departure that the boy would be taken to “BAPTISMAL ROOM” where he would be tortured, believing that he would confess to the allegation. .

“I eavesdropped on the last discussion between Prophet Bisi and the three other police officers that my brother be taken to the Baptismal Room where he would be tortured. At this time, I never knew the case was not even indented or recorded. Shortly after the order, I saw my brother dragged out of the station handcuffed with his hands firmly twisted and rested at his back. He was taken away to the Baptismal room located near the station.

“About thirty minutes later, my brother, Mr Ade Awodeyi and the other police officer with whom he carried out the order, emerged from a distant building where the baptismal room was located, Piloting my brother; his eyes already swollen and blurred and couldn’t stand on his legs. Instead of taking him back to the station, they handed him over to Prophet Bisi and directed we go home with him. Tobi was helped into the car and we all drove in Prophet Bisi’s car back home.

“Immediately he departed, the boy’s condition got worst. He held his stomach and started vomiting. We called Prophet Bisi who pleaded we take him to the hospital and that he would join us there. We thought we could have access to health services in the state specialist hospital but later drove to Liberty Hospital, Oluwatuyi quarters. The Doctor expressed their inability to attend to him and at that point, I advised Pastor Bisi that we take him to our family hospital who also rejected him and later referred us to Hope land Hospital where Tobi later passed on.

“We were told he inhaled a thick dose of gas substance from canisters and that it damaged his brain and caused a serious disorder to his body system. The remains of the boy was released to Prophet Bisi, myself and my uncle. His remains was later deposited in the mortuary around 9.30pm or thereabout same day”, Seun said.

Already, the Police Public Relations Officer [PPRO], Wole Ogodo has said that investigation has commenced to unravel what led to the death of Tobi .

Was tortured to death?
I'm sure this also will just pass without any justice.....our police force is full of illiterates and junks.

It is saddening.

Once you are arrested here, just be ready for the worst.

You can't even ask for a lawyer!

Maybe it is cos I watch too much of American movies, but I do like theirs!

"I want my lawyer"

May God grant the family the fortitude to bear the loss!
