Hello house, I have a question and I will appreciate each contribution. I have been applying for a few years now (not in US Unis), the most difficult part of each application has always been the referees/getting references. I will have to call, send SMS and even send airtime. The rude and ascerbic remarks I have been subjected are teeming. In fact, there was a particular situation that my application package was not complete and the window subsequently shut. Change referee ? He kept telling me he will do it. And also, these Profs only write a few lines and because of their massive ego they usually do not take kindly to one sending them pre-written literature to just copy/paste in the referee page. My question is - What are the consequence(s) of setting up a (or two) bogus email address and inputting such in the application page as the referee contact ( ofcourse work/institution email) . And since one has unfettered access to such email address, I can reply to my reference request at my convenience and in a sterling manner too ? Thanks fellas....... |

ferfer: That was a very good observation. It is unfortunate that students - undergraduate, M.Sc and even Ph.D - find ourselves in this 'Referee issh'. From my observation, reference letters, arguably in some situations, carries much weight than GRE itself in application packet. But, some lecturers are either not apt in writing or 'too busy' or don't even understand the implication of the letters. If you see the letters some lecturer writes, uhmmmmm .....It took me days to get a checklist assessed for a sound reference letter (available if you need a copy). Possible Solution. 1. As an applicant, get a sample copy of a good reference letter and revamp it aptly. 2. Do not just pick Prof. as your referee, ask for their availability to assist before filling their names on your application (some schools may not alter it) 3. After persistent call and no response, take a time and travel down to meet the Prof. (remembering 'if Muhammed story ....) with your laptop, modem or a phone with hotspot. 4. If none works, make a request to the school for a change on your application. As regards using 'fabricated e-mail account', it may be difficult because those schools might be aware of that possibility and some may even require official e-mail e.g successg@oau.edu. I believe those tips would yield a good response ciao. 5 Likes |

Hisvoice: Yes, I am interested in the checklist assessed sound reference letter (caleb.seun@yahoo.com). Thank you. Secondly, the fabricated e-mail account could actually be in the form a name as authentic ones usually are , for instance - biliaminu.saka@oau.edu.ng What are the consequences of setting up such phony contacts and going ahead to respond to the reference request? 1 Like |

ferfer: As much as I can't speculate the consequence of using a bogus e-mail account for referencing, I believe you can still get it done in the right way through those steps highlighted. Only a graduate section of a school may determine what could happen if one impersonate. Having said that, I think our image as a Nigerian is still undergoing rebranding than to add this peccadilloes. Check your mail. I have sent the referee stuff 3 Likes |

Hisvoice:Hello Hisvoice, I agree with all your points except with d 'fabricated email' issue. Not all lecturers/schools have official/school email address....like my Professor at University of Ibadan, he doesn't have any, so he uses ********@yahoo.co.uk...even if d student carry modem, laptop, printer, photocoping machin e.tc to lecturers, some will still give filmsy excuse....even if u carry cybercafe...some won't have time.... My only 2cent to prospective applicants is to try and persuade d lecturer, and if he doesn't turn up....simply get d reference letter manually by hand, scan it, create email address (or better still, if u have access or can create official email like @oau.ng.....which I doubt) then send it yourself using d email created. ..SIMPLE! NB: many applicants have suffered rejection from university due negligence of some lecturers... 1 Like |

ridsan4real:While your recommendation may work for some applicant, it may on the other carry dire effect on others. For example, the university of alabama, Tulascoosa, recommendation page state this explicitly. So, carefully select referee and please inform them ahead before appending their names for anything. Success to all |

Hello people. I am a prospective grad school applicant and an ardent follower of this thread, I thank the many altruists who selflessly render assistance in one way or the other on here. Congratulations to those who recently got their visas and goodluck to those still awaiting funding decision. I recall the many sleepless nights, all in the name of reading one of the success stories of some of folks here. I relish those moments, as it galvanized me and gave me assurance that hardwork truly produces fruits. I read many transcripts here; drhopeful, happyday, sureb0y, imperiouxx, sirriddy, bigfrancis21, MsNas, DanjaNinja, to name a few. However, as assiduous as I was with this act, I am sure I didnt see it all, I barely accessed 50% of the wealth of information sitting idle in this goldmine. This was definitely not due to my ineptitude, I recall sirriddy confessing that he; on the day he took his GRE, sent his scores to some schools he didnt eventually apply to. A couple of others are still in the rut; choosing schools that rarely offer funding or assistantship, or placing all hopes on 2 or 3 schools because of unavailability of funds only to find out that the nebulous information the graduate coordinator provided was merely a bait to 'chop' your application fee. The solution I am about to proffer isn't a panacea for all your grad school obstacles, it is merely a solution in fact, depending on the response it gets. However, it is a good place to start from. I was inspired by Mark's graduation speech to Havard Class of 2017 about connecting people. I created a google form to accommodate information from folks who have applied to graduate school. This will enable prospective applicants have an idea of the school they plan on applying to or schools they can apply to. The form is astoundingly succinct and will barely take 2 minutes to fill; corrections are very welcome. This is the shortened link to fill in the info; http:// bit . ly / 2s4JJx6, (copy and clear the blank spaces) I hope the moderators don't pull this down. I also hope this turns out to be as good as it sounded in my head. This is the shortened link where prospective applicants can view the responses provided http:// bit . ly / 2rvSy5Q (copy and clear the blank spaces). Obrigado. 3 Likes |

ferfer: Hi Ferfer, my suggestion might be late but here is how I survived the referee/recommendation ish. I asked 2 very senior colleagues having about 8yrs experience to write me 'professional' recommendations. I know they wrote glowing ones. I submitted only 1 academic rec from a Prof because of the difficulty getting them to write one and I survived it. No school blinked. This worked for MSc for 5 schools, don't know about PhD. |

Vicrown:With a First in Philosophy, your AW and verbal should be off the roof, but what do I know? You should be able to secure admission to "safe schools" but I'll advise you to consider rewriting the GRE since there's still enough time for Fall 2018. Again, what do I know? 1 Like |
