i have a 2months old mongrels, that is very playful he follows anybody on first sight and hardly bark. Pls, what do i do to these puppy. |

my opinion, i do not know what you mean by "nigerian puppy" but i guess you are referring to the mongrels(local dogs), trying to make a dog tough, could some times come from within, or taught or simply developed, from within, it would depend on the breed of the dog, some breeds are known to be very protective of their territories, so you would have to make research on the breed of your dog. taught, or trained, some dogs are trained to be mean, for you to want a mean dog, it would require you to reduce its social interaction with people, although, this is not advised, what you have to do is locate the cage of the dog at the back of the house, and limit the number of people it gets to see, gradually, you would see your dog become a monster, the amount of food should also come into consideration, but at two months, it needs all the food it can get... developed, this is when a dog with natural protective tendencies, is now isolated thereby luring the monster in it to come out.. once again..my opinion.. 5 Likes |

@seun, well some of the replies i have here has compelled me to always spend more time with the puppy.Today, i delibratley brought it food out side other than the usual -inside cage- and also released our fowl too, while feeding the puppy. so, i took some steps backward not to scare the fowl while the puppy was still feeding, the fowl rushed to that place and started feeding along with the dog as well. I was thinking perhaps, the puppy would bark at them to scare them away because i have seen cases like that but it did not. with that i concluded that these puppy is not the type that is protective of it territory coupled with the fact that it does not bark and follows strangers on first sight.... With these, i have however decided to u know feed it with a little weed and mokit (dry gen)  , change the location of the cage to a place where it wouldnt have to see people or other domestic animal that much and anytime its out, he is usually on chain even when i know its inconviniencing the puppy all these is just to make the puppy tough... |

Get your dog proper training so you won't end up worsening your dog' condition. Your dog needs to see a behaviourist. |

You see, this is why I said tell us your plan before carrying it out. People do some very bad things while trying to make their dogs "tough". celestinho: With these, i have however decided to u know feed it with a little weed and mokit (dry gen)Alcohol and weed are more dangerous to dogs and especially puppies than human beings. If you feed your dog with alcohol or weed he will die. change the location of the cage to a place where it wouldnt have to see people or other domestic animal that much and anytime its outThis is actually not bad but your puppy is still young. You need to socialize him for now so that he will not be afraid of anything. You need to take him out to a variety of noisy places and expose him to all types of people and animals so he won't be scared of people. he is usually on chain even when i know its inconveniencing the puppy all these is just to make the puppy tough...For now concentrate on raising, feeding, and socializing him very well so he grows to be big, strong, fit, intelligent and absolutely fearless. Most breeds like the german shepherds tend to get protective as they approach sexual maturity, which starts from six month but in most cases it extends to 1 year plus. Dogs naturally would love to protect anyrhing they love, for Nigeria locale dogs, it is same with them although their temperament is not predictable as they mite ve bin mixed wit diff dogs of diff temperament in dere linage, nd ve no specific features dey carry. But our Nigerian local dogs if trained well would defend u almost more than(if am to be exagerating) or close to d way a foreign dog will, if u rily want ur dog to be strong willed nd defend u without fear or running away,especially wen facing a threatening situation, u mst socialize the pup, introduce him to new things everyday outsyd its territory, introduce him to loud noise lyk knock out, if posible a gun, loud music nd so o. While doing that ensure that u dnt hit dd dog as dis will mk him feel humans cnt harm him, this kind of training builds its confidence, nd wen I say loud noises, u shuldnt start wit a very loud noise or music, start wit a soft one nd gradually introduce him to oda ones. After u ve built its confidence, u will nw want him to be teritorial, most breeds bcom teritorial naturally nd so do our Nigerian local dogs, u shuldnt let d dog see u often wit strangers within ur teritory, dogs like freedom, try limit its freedom by putting him on chains in an area where it won't have contact with humans, (this shouldn't be done all tru d dogs life as it cn cause behavioural problems) after doin dis, wen u want to give it its food, delay him sometimes he would get fraustrated nd sometimes put d food dwn where he cnt reach while chained, after few months of isolating, try asking someone to bring his dog into ur compound, ur dog will react cos he knws dt is his teritory nd dt d oda dog is trespasing, do not unchain him, dos tend to bark more when on chains especially wen it cnt reach his desired target, after dat excercise u nw knw ur dog is teritorial, den for him barking @ strangers, he would do dt as a result of him nt seeing his teritory being invaded regularly by strangers or always with u. I know u may say dis is nt necesary for a local dog bt I tell u it is, cos I also ve a local dog dt I trained dis way, she fears ntin cos I socialized her well, bark @ strangers nd strange tinz dt she wasn't introduced to, although she fears gun sounds as she tends to urinate wen she hears it nd dts cos I didn't introduce her to such loud noise, shez well trained nd I cn tell u dt in my family shez d most loved nd no one wants to get rid of her despite d fact dt shez local cos shez an all round dog, I ve oda dogs though bt she has always bin dere, she has even helped trained younger dogs bark to certain tinz. I took my tym to train her cos she was given to me by someone close nd I wanted to prove dt local dogs can also be great, she has her own leash dt I use in walking her on daily bases, people mite laff nd say "I am walking a local dog, bt I tell u shez awesum. Jst take ur tym, show love, train him well nd dnt try luking dwn on it, I feel more protected walking wit her on d street dan my german shepherds 8 Likes |

My dog eats delicious orobo chicken lap every day, and immediately after eating he goes back to his duty post with more aggression than before eating. He sleeps and acts sluggish when he has not eaten. A well fed dog barks louder and bites harder than a hungry dog because he has more energy. And while it's true that a guard dog should be isolated from strangers, he should be allowed to roam the compound when strangers aren't around. |

What I'm saying is that it can be made less unpleasant. You allow your dogs to move around freely and enjoy happiness and then you suddenly start chaining them and provoking them with food for several months in order to 'transform' them. Your transformation process is mentally torturous for a dog that has always been allowed to move around freely. Mental torture is not needed. It is better to start restricting the puppy from day 1 and not allowing him to see strangers within his territory. "If I do that, how will he be socialized in order to become fearless?" Well, you should socialize him only outside your compound. Take him out for socialization. I don't want my dog to bark because he is chained down or because he is hungry. my female caucasian is 11 months old, she doesnt bark during the day even if a stranger comes in,she gets scared and runs away if someone charges at her, she isnt hostile to strangers as she ll always rush to play with anyone she sees though most people run due to her size and speed. she eats anything i mean anything from generator electric wire,shoes, clothes,grass, plantain leaves.. just name it. At night she s like a demon, she ll shred anything she sees, if anyone mistakenly leaves his shoe or hangs clothes outside its gone, my cars are not safe as my tire valve has been chewed with lots of scratches on the body. same goes for my dads cars. she barks crazily at night and will just keep barking till the wee hours of the morning for no just cause. she is very stubborn and seems to forget instructions easily. she keeps digging big holes in the ground and she ll mess the compound up with leaves, plants she picks from the backyard. guys help me out cos my car now needs some paint job. 1 Like |

2sExy1:bros food is not her problem cos we make sure her plate is never empty. We contracted a well known restaurant that gives us left overs. We have a fridge where her food is stored plus some dog food. so food isn't her problem. The vet says she has scavenger traits. and am really worried about that. |

I perfectly understand what you are going through because I raised some dogs years back that they could open doors, shake hands, sit etc but this things don't come like that except there is a means of passing on the traits. And besides, una don over pamper the dog sef. Have you ever eaten a food that just make you lazy? I have bro... let alone a dog. You should have inquired about the mother, or even wish to see the mother. Again, just because your dog is a German Shepherd or Alsatian does not automatically translate to a wild dog, which I believe was the determining factor in your purchase procedure. I have also seen what we call bingo terrorize any intruder, a stranger... I dared not enter their compound in those days except it was changed. And all her offspring was just like that ,while across that same building where this bingo is located, there was another bingo in the opposite building accross the street. 2 Times bigger but not hostile, much friendlier and all her offspring was same. the only time I heard off bingo being aggressive was when she fought bingo 1 because of a male dog . Bingo 1 actually attacked her and she did the needful and dealt with bingo one. The skin was torn off at different places. It's the DNA bro |
