At the start of July, the body DeCarol Deloney, was discovered in the trunk of a car. The United Airlines flight attendant had suffered multiple stab wounds and a head injury. Her body was wrapped in a plastic bag. Earlier in July, the boyfriend of Deloney’s daughter, Demarius McGriggs, 18, was charged in her stabbing death, The Chicago Post-Tribune reports. McGriggs told police that he killed Deloney following a heated argument because she wanted her daughter, 17-year-old Alyssa Barrett, to abort his baby.
Shortly following McGriggs’ arrest, Barrett was also charged in her mother’s death. According to investigators, both McGriggs and Barrett plotted the murder and Barrett “frequently talked of robbing and/or killing her mother.” Two friends of the couple have also been implicated in the disposing of Deloney’s corpse, which remained in the trunk of her Toyota while Barrett told people that she had flown to China on a work assignment. However, investigators soon realized that the 54-year-old was not scheduled to fly anywhere and began retracing her steps. The vehicle was discovered on a vacant street with her body still inside.
During a search of Deloney’s home, investigators discovered a bloody stain on the basement floor and bloody water in a wet-dry vacuum lying nearby. Meanwhile, the young couple was spotted together at a jewelry store and pawn shop at Southlake Mall. Clerks described the teens as a “normal couple” who “appeared happy and were smiling at each other.”
Both teens are being held without bail.
