Sometimes some people talk and people around asks themselves 'what's he saying', they ask themselves this because they don't get to understand what he is saying also because that person has communication problem,this topic 'How to improve communication skills' will identify the causes of this problem and their solutions .So if you know anybody with this problem please share this with that person.Causes of communication problems and ways to improve it
•Little knowledge on the use of English:when you don't know how to use a language well you end up abusing it,this problem makes you pause frequently while talking consequently making the listener lost or bored of your speech.
SolutionTry to enhance your knowledge on that particular language. You can do this by listening to useful radio and TV programmes,reading books,getting a private teacher(if already out of school) and using the internet to your advantage.
•Low self esteem and timidity:these two go hand-in-hand some times in the sense that when you have low self-esteem you will be shy,but not always so. This affects communication by making the timid person nervous and forgets what he had in mind to say. Some people are timid naturally while some are timid in the presence of maybe a crush,a boss,a stranger or an interviewer.
Solution:read books that will help you overcome this problem or seek a counsellor's advice.You can check out my list of recommended books for human skill improvement
•Dishonesty:when you talk to people and you lie or exaggeration just to make the person interested in what you are saying, the fact is, for that moment your conversation will interest the listener ,but when that person finds out you were lying the other time,he will not want to listen to you again.
Solution:instead of lying there are other things you can use to make a conversation interesting,jokes are surely going to make your conversation interesting,but joke with caution.
Insensitivity:when you want to start a conversation and you don't notice the mood of your listener then the communication may not go well.
Solution: Is he happy? Is he angry? Is he nervous? ... these are the kind of questions that should come to mind when you want to start a conversation. You have to know the mood and the corresponding type of conversation,in summary be sensitive to your listener's feelings.
Poor listening skills:if you are the type of person that only waits for the last sentence of your partner's speech so you can quickly say yours,you need to check that. You are not communicating if you do that, because communication is about speaking and listening.
Solution:develop good listening skills,try to understand what the person is saying .This will help you raise good discussion topics and will make communication longer and enjoyable .
Communication is the key to having a great interpersonal relationship,people will find you interesting and 'fun-to-be-with' if you possess good communication skills.
