delishpot: Biko o, make una no vex o, (before nairaland canibals and auto spell checkers come eat me). But do Igbo women put beads on their heads like Edo women? I have never noticed such before o.Though the Binis are well known to use the coral beads, the igbos also make use of the red ceremonial coral beads It's a cultural accessory of the igbos (I don't know if it's borrowed or not) The pictures up there are traditional wedding pictures I don't think an igbo bride is fully dressed without adorning some complementing accessories like the coral beads, the ihe nti and ihe aka 1 Like |

zeemoore: I know Igbos wear coral beads. I am kalabari and we eat and breathe coral beads too but we dont wear the woven ones as blouse and our women have beaded hats, walking sticks and arm and calf bands. But the Edos have a particular way they weave their beads as showls for the shoulder/ upper body and tiaras for their heads. I never noticed that the igbos too use the Edo womens style. I thought the igbos use it around the waist, necks, wrists and feet on strings and not woven as blouses or tiaras. Oh well we learn everyday I guess. But I believe Igbos are mixing cultures too much. They do not stick to theirs esp their brides. Some of them were even using aso oke for traditional marriage ceremonies, some will dress like indians choosing to wear the sari for their traditional wedding, some will dress like fulani milk maids while some dress like edo brides, I noticed some wearing the ijaw coral bead hats with coral necklace like type youruba brides wear. Too mixed up. |

delishpot: Well, I don't know much about the igbo culture and tradition but one thing I know for sure is the igbos also wear coral beads around their neck and hair I have igbo friends who also breathe coral beads (sorry for borrowing your word ) |

Delishpot:I didn't see this part yesterday I guess you modified your post You have to understand that Igbos borrow cultures a lot An igbo has no problem wearing clothes of other groups, speaking the language of other groups and traveling/living in the lands of other groups. The thing is that the Igbo are quick to adapt to whatever new influence they may experience. We all know the igbo culture has incorporated some aspect of Yoruba, ijaw and Bini culture just like ibibio incorporates efik culture |

zeemoore: I didn't see this part yesterday Ah, ok, its not bad just that through time, the real igbo culture as it concerns female atire may be lost if the trend continues it will become a thing of "do as thou will". And I think the beauty of a traditional ceremony lies in the atire and way of life of a given society. If I go to an edo wedding i will capture the true beauty of an edo bride and groom as practiced by them through time, but if I go to an igbo traditional wedding and the bride is wearing Aso Oke or sari I will be like . Just my take on it sha. 1 Like |
