Ghana is considering screening all
foreign students for Ebola, in all the
West African country's Universities, as
part of efforts to curb an outbreak.
The move comes as the spread of the
haemorrhagic fever claims more than
1,000 lives in sub-Saharan Africa.
Although Ghana is yet to record a case,
there are fears the nation of 25 million
people, is not prepared to handle the
deadly virus in case of an outbreak.
The Kwame Nkrumah University of
Science and Technology (KNUST), one of
Ghana's major public schools of higher
learning, recently announced an
indefinite postponement of its re-
opening to strategise about how to deal
with a possible outbreak.
Reacting to concerns over how Ghanaian
Universities are handling the possibility
of foreign students entering the country
with the disease, Deputy Education
Minister in charge of tertiary institutions,
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said the
ministry is considering a wholesale
screening of students as part of
strategies to avoid an outbreak of the
disease on University campuses.
“It is very likely the re-opening of all our
institutions will be postponed while the
Inter-Ministerial taskforce puts in place
the necessary screening mechanisms
and health readiness processes before
schools are re-open.
He told Joy FM that the mechanisms will
allow for "thorough screening of
especially foreign students who will be
coming from these countries”.
Ebola has so far killed more than 1,000
people in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone
and Nigeria.
It is contracted through direct contact
with fluids of infected patients as well as
from eating bush meat: apes, fruit bats
and antelopes. The World Health
Organization says it has lost control over
the fast-spreading epidemic and has
declared it an international public health
emergency.
In compliance, Nigeria, Liberia and Sierra
Leone have all declared national health
emergencies and restricted movement
in certain areas to contain the spread.
