I don't know how many Nigerian Fulani know the story of Penda Yoro but I will tell it. Too many Nigerian Fulani have been Hausanised/Arabised. The traditional Fulani has only two goals in life: to own the largest number of animals in the world and to listen to stories told by his pretty wife at night. 'Penda Yoro was a girl who has shown the value of dignity, nobility and sensitivity. She does not live, but she must not be forgotten. Penda Yoro was a young, beautiful, educated, sought after girl. She was the revelation of the year. As a servant to a French Catholic missionary she received an advanced European style education. She was more educated than her brothers, for whom whites were taboo. She dressed in the expensive boubous/kaftans referred to by the name “expensive oil.” It was the fabric of 1968 sold in Pakistan. She lived in the Tenenkou area (in the region of Mopti) where there were weekly village markets which still exist today. The young Fulbe(Fulani) people took advantage of these meetings to show off their best clothes and their beauty. Penda Yoro was a very welcoming girl and every evening griots gathered around her in order to celebrate with her completely dazed by her legendary beauty. The song below is in dedication to her, Allah barka ma Penda Yoro. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQErnjPgayg 2 Likes |

firestar: Sure, since the lyrics are too long (it's a long song) The interpretation of this song is that the composer is giving praise/homage to Penda Yoro who lived long ago (late 1800s). She was a very educated woman, and extremely beautiful that almost every man wanted to follow her. I mean why not? She was more intelligent than they were and had a beauty that could give a young man a heart attack. She had teeth as white as fresh milk, and smelled extremely wonderfully. In the song, the author says that he goes from village to village (all these Villages are located in present day Fulani land in Mali (Maasina)). From village to village he follows her because he does not want to stray away from her, the author has a lot of admiration and admonishes Penda Yoro. Throughout the song he is complementing her physical beauty and how he can not stay away from her for too long because she is so indirectly alluring. All men love her and wish to make her their own. 2 Likes |

Fulaman198: (Sighs) These are the kind of songs to be sung at full moon. I'm going to memorize it. There ought to be some sort movie(?) adaptations to bring this to the lime-light. (Hmm...) 2 Likes |

firestar: Yah maybe somewhere, it's hard to find traditional African movies these days from West Africa. I have seen a few from Senegal, Burkina Faso, Chad, and a few from Nigeria. The ones enacted in Nigeria don't seem to be that good though . I will look to see if there is some kind of movie enactment that includes the song. 2 Likes |

firestar: LOL yes like the Abominable snowman or the Wendingo in Marvel Comics lolllll. Have you watched Saint Seiya yet? It's such a great series. It starts off slow like Naruto, but then it becomes very engaging. It's a very motivating anime. It makes you want to become a super warrior and protect people. 1 Like |
