I have a 1997 Volkswagen Golf (Golf 3) "Automatic transmission", I have driven for 3+ month on Nigerian road. Of late, i discover that the RPM goes as high as 3000rev/min before it shifts to gear 2 against 2000rev/min that it used to before shifting to gear 2. I have decided to service the the gear. I don"t know the recommended ATF for the car. I m so happy my mechanic confessed he is sure of the [b]dextron grade [/b]to be used too. Kindly help me out if you know it. Thanks.

DO NOT ADD REGULAR (DEXTRON) ATF INTO THE UNIT!!  NEVER ADD ANY AFTERMARKET "FIXES" OR SEALANTS!!!

Volkswagen introduced its own specifications in mid '90s. Since then this classification system is the starting point for selecting the technically suitable products for all vehicles manufactured by the VW group (Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Skoda).

This is your part number for the recomended oil (part#G052162A2) its a fully synthetic transmision oil.

Ask around for it I hope you can get it.

What does your Owner's Manual recommend?

Manual recommends dextron grade ATF. It was not stated if is grade I,ii..... or whatever.

I have used dextron3. The car now works great and shift perfectly. Thanks all.
