Although he is a defender, Rojo possesses immense
quality on the ball as shown here. With Chris Smalling and
Phil Jones not the most comfortable on the ball, Rojo will
add a bit of composure and class to the defence which
enables him to carry the ball out. Whether the
Argentinian will try controlling a long ball like this in a
game at Old Trafford is another matter altogether!
I'm not sure how well doing this in a Premier League
game would go down with Louis van Gaal, however, this
does show that Rojo is a confident player, something that
the United defence is crying out for. His disciplinary
record, however, is something United could do without
as they are still quite thin on the ground on the defensive
front.
Rojo had a fantastic World Cup with Argentina, helping
them reach the final where they were defeated by
Germany. He was also named in the Opta team of the
tournament which is determined on 250 different
statistical events. He played left back for his national
team throughout the tournament but played
predominantly as as centre back for Sporting Lisbon.
Rojo joined Sporting Lisbon for £3.5m after a terrible
time in Russia at Spartak Moscow where he only made 8
league appearances in 18 months. During his time in
Portugal he impressed at the heart of the defence for
Sporting and cemented his place in the national side. He
scored six goals during his two years at the club, an
impressive tally for a defender.
