Ekiti State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Olusola Fasubaa, has warned health workers against spreading panic messages about the Ebola virus disease.
Addressing reporters in Ado-Ekiti, Fasubaa lamented that the panic message had led to the death of a non- Ebola patient in the state .He said the health worker from Ogotun-Ekiti who had come to the state capital for an official assignment slumped and later died because he did not receive medical attention.“On 20th August ,2014, a 55-60 year-old health care giver at Ogotun- Ekiti apparently well woman who was said not to have had any complaints of illness in the last two months and no current history of travel outside the state ( according to her neighbors ) .“She got to Data Bank of the Ministry of Health at about 1.pm and collapsed after coughing out blood and subsequently vomited and she was immediately tagged Ebola victim.“Without an adequate history taken, people started running away .” Fasubaa narrated .He spoke of how four different private hospitals rejected the patient due to SMS messages allegedly sentby some doctors, suggesting that it was an Ebola case .“The woman subsequently died in the late evening .The unnecessary write up through the social media by some doctors in the state is uncalledfor ,as it seemed to be counter – productive to the efforts of the State Government in containing and curtailing the spread of the virus .” helamented .The commissioner recalled that similar misinformation recently caused row at the National Youth Service Corps camp in the state when a young corp member collapsed and the healthcare givers ran away on suspicion that he was an Ebola victim .He recalled that it took the intervention of his ministry to save the corp member from an avoidable death after he was left unattended forabout nine hours .The corp member, according to him was later diagnosed to have sufferedfrom an inadequately treated malaria and the National Laboratory Lagos has since confirmed that he was negative to the virus.
