A PRESENTATION BEFORE THE CITIZENS, NYSC, STAKEHOLDERS, HONOURABLE HOUSE, SENATE, AND PRESIDENT OF NIGERIA, FOR THE ENLISTMENT OF CORP MEMBERS AS NEW MANAGERS OF THE NIGERIAN ECONOMY.


1.0 THE BACKGROUND

For a Country like ours, in the depth of penury, where our people are starving and living in slums, in the midst of plenty; our Nation, abundant with factors of production (labour, land, capital) yet eluded by national progress: our Nation, with a potential force of about 150,000 vibrant graduates offering themselves annually with little or nothing to show for it, while less than a thousand got our independence, what shall we do? We Shall provide the missing factor of entrepreneurship and enlist the skill labourers (Corp members) as managers. This makes the background of this presentation; a today that needs to be reflected, that our tomorrow be different.

2.0 QUESTION TIME
After the first forty years, this 2014 is significant to the scheme, hence the questions arising;
o Firstly, is national integration alone what we really need in our nation today?
o If really it is, can it be achieved amidst mass poverty and mismanagement of resources?
o The knowledge Corpers impact on students, what has it produced since 1973?
o What is the fate of the Corpers after service? (Most ex-Corpers are still jobless after 5-10 years of service)
o What about the emotional distress students have when the Corpers they love leave, and more come and leave?
o Is this the best way NYSC can be?
I am well convinced that corpers should not teach, but engage in national development.

3.0 TRANSFORMING NYSC
Solution:
NYSC shall be a force to be revered and emulated if these points be taken seriously
A. AN AWAKE TO REALITY
B. AND TO PURPOSE
C. ENVISIONING A FUTURE
D. COLLECTING NEW IDEAS

A. THE REALITY
Our economy has been crawling. Unemployment everywhere: more than 25million people are jobless. This is great danger to the nation and her citizens, rich or poor.
No ministry, bank, firm can collect up to a percentage of this. Even as thousands are employed, 100s of thousands are filling the pool.
Let us realize that all that our classrooms and NYSC produce are CV writers, job-seekers.
The reality is we have the resources, but have lacked the conversion.
We have had a great army of more than 2million graduates (ex-Corpers), that could have turned the economy of Nigeria around, and we sent them into the classrooms.

B. WAKING UP TO PURPOSE:
The purpose of a cause naturally guides its course. The purpose of the Corps has been to foster national unity and integration, and the purpose of we Corp members is to serve. Both ideas are nice; given the background which Gen Yakubu Gowon conceived the idea.
Today, our worst threat is poverty, unemployment which feed corruption and instability, hence
SOLUTION
The purpose of NYSC shall be "National progress", and the purpose of Corp members to "transform/build."
Since the Corp members will still transform different regions, there will even be more unity and we are then "serving" at our full capacity.

C. ENVISIONING A FUTURE
Because there have been no guiding vision for NYSC, there has been no yardstick for measuring relevance: hence the poor results.
SOLUTION
Give NYSC a vision: a vision of a prosperous Nigeria, a world power, a ist world Nigeria, a Nigeria without poverty but lends to other super powers: an ideal that will hence guide the course of NYSC hourly, daily monthly, quarterly and yearly....

D. A COLLECTION OF NEW IDEAS
The new ideas that will run the new NYSC will be
i. PPA: Fg, States, LGAs shall provide new capital projects and assign Corp members to build/manage them with expertise assistance.
o Projects like dams, refineries, technological production, schools (building many and managing), hospitals, etc
o Agriculture: There shall also be new mega, modernized farms Plant/Livestock, while some will be processing and some doing the sales/exportation.
o Manufacturing of finished goods from raw materials (manufacturing sector) like textile, beverages etc
o Also, Corp members (Architects…) designing and redesigning Cities and Villages, building of parks (nature and amusement), beautification of streets.
o The tourist sector which is highly undeveloped is a great field for Corpers to transform: for national wealth, relaxation, and personal development and income.
o Building of roads, halls, teaching entrepreneurship (practically).
o Working as special teams to help advance different units of the sectors of the economy wherever requested.
o The energy sector like developing wind mills, solar and other alternative energy sources will do well to have corps members run with expertise assistance.
o NYSC will be a time for us to practice what we learnt in school.
o Corpers should engage in massive production that will lead to massive exportation, naturally
o While some will engage in massive orientation/advertisements etc to turn the eyes of Nigerians from foreign products to Nigerian products: Which some will work to help standardize.

These and other inexhaustible options will no doubt lead to a richly employed and fast developing Nigeria.

ii. Community Service
Here, the Corpers sensitize the society as like CDS, inspect school to check standards: how much technological, what they are lacking and how to improve them. Also, collecting information of the needs of the communities and solving them.

iii. CAMP
Rather than morning, afternoon and evening parades, the 3weeks camping period will be intensively for the preparation of the individuals for the Corpers’ industry, city planning etc.
Also, the new community service work will be taught.

4.0 SUMMARY
o Corpers realized to be a great potential for national development.
o PPA changed from schools to capital projects.
o CDS channelled to real development.
o Camps maximized to work training centers.
o Corpers become the engine of Nigeria’s development.

5.0 CONCLUSION
With these ideas Nigeria’s economy will be great: imagine if all the 778 LGAs have new mega farms it will translate to billions of hard currency and so much employment and entrepreneurship. And the individuals will be ready for after NYSC.
Remember, more ventures will be added subsequently, like more farms so people will be employed. The cities will be transformed, industries established.
After service, the nation is developed, and the individual is ready for after NYSC and other countries of the world will adopt such.
