U.K. GOVT COMMISSION INVESTIGATING CHRIS OYAKHILOME
(Commission Probes Suspicious Church Financial Transactions)
--Attorney Patryk Utulu

The U.K. Charity Commission is investigating Pastor Chris Oyakhilome and Christ Embassy UK branch over controversial payments and suspicious other financial transactions. The Commission is specifically looking into Christ Embassy's transfer of at least N941 million (£3.6 million) to overseas entities between 2008 and 2012, reported PREMIUM TIMES..

The Commission said its statutory investigation is looking into Christ Embassy over “a number of serious concerns relating to the use of charitable funds, in particular large connected party payments and potential misapplication of grant funding.”
Statutory investigation are only opened to investigate “the most serious” regulatory breaches to “determine whether there has been any misconduct or mismanagement on behalf of the charity trustees; to establish whether charitable funds have been properly applied and take appropriate remedial action if necessary.” After interviewing Christ Embassy's board of trustees and going through church financial records for a year, the commission was unconvinced that the church has been prudent in managing its finances.

COMMISSION'S INTERIM DECISIONS WHILE PROBE CONTINUES:
(1): U.K. Tax Authority has seized N711.4 million (£ 2.7 million) of church donations pending the outcome of the investigation,
(2): The Commission has suspended the church's Board of Trustees
(3): The Commission appointed an interim manager Mr. Rod Weston of an international audit and accounting firm to take over the running of the church and its finances (Mr. Weston would “take over the management of the charity, its staff, assets, interests, and relations with third parties).

According to PREMIUM TIMES:
The Charity Commission has already discovered that the church may have made suspicious payment worth at least N941 million ((£3.6 million) to some individuals and companies closely connected with Christ Embassy.

A study of Christ Embassy's financial statements from 2009 to 2012 posted on the Charity Commission’s websites, show that about N403 million (£1,572,047) was paid to Love World Limited for the transmission of the church’s broadcast. But the commission found it suspicious that the sole director/sole shareholder of Love World Limited is one Pastor Obiora Chiemeka who is also listed as a trustee of the church. Pastor Chiemeka was appointed a trustee in 2009, the same year Christ Embassy began making payments to Chiemeka's company.

Christ Embassy also paid an estimated N538.5 million (£2.1 million) as grants to mostly Nigerian partner organisations between 2008 and 2012. But on closer examination, PREMIUM TIMES discovered that some of the charges and items the payments were said to cover were arbitrary, suggesting the payments might have been used for other purposes than what Christ Embassy publicly listed.

For instance, between 2010 and 2012 N320.4 million (£1.24 Million) was paid to Love World Television Ministry, LTM. The payments appear to be a duplication of the payment for transmission of TV broadcast paid to Love World Limited. Although the church’s dedicated TV station is called Love World Television, it is not clear how Love World Television Ministry is different from Love World Limited. Love World Television Ministry is not listed on the church’s website among the ministries Christ Embassy runs. Thus Christ Embassy appears to be paying two different "TV entities" yet listed only one publicly.

Also, in 2009, N9.6 million (£37,785) was paid to Christ Embassy's healing ministry known as Healing School. In 2010, N20.5 million (£97,850) was paid to the same school. But the amount paid to Healing School dropped drastically in 2011 to N346, 072 (£1,350). Then the payment to the ministry increased astronomically to N25.6 million (£100,000) in 2012.

When PREMIUM TIMES called Christ Embassy’s international office for comments on this investigation and findings, an official who answered the phone said those who could speak on the issue were not in the office.

JUST A BRIEF CORRECTION: Anita Oyakhilome is NOT a white woman. She had white and black parents. Therefore, she is multi-racial. In some countries like Brazil and Belize, she will be designated a mulato. In UK/USA/Nigeria Anita Oyakhilome is a black woman.
