The United States has commended the Federal Government??s successful curtailing the outbreak of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the country.

The Nation reports that the commendation was given by the U.S Under Secretary of State on African Affairs, Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, during a visit to the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, in Abuja.

The U.S envoy, however, expressed concern at the spread of the virus in other West African countries like Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Thomas-Greenfield, who commended Prof. Chukwu, his staff and the Nigerian government on the effective handling of the disease revealed that the U.S and the federal government are working relentlessly together to nip the disease, and acknowledged that the efforts had been very successful.

??I commended the minister and his staff and the government of Nigeria on how effectively they have been working to deal with the Ebola outbreak here in Nigeria?? Thomas ??Greenfield said. ??They are taking the right steps to control this. And, they are having great success here. I appealed to the minister to assist neighbouring Liberia, Sierra-Leone as they also grapple with this terrible outbreak.??

Thomas-Greenfield denied the allegation that U.S was not ready to assist Nigeria with the experimental drugs, and insisted that the Centre for Disease Control has proactively supported all the countries in the West African region in dealing with the situation.

She said what is more important is how to control the spread of the disease and not about ZMapp. She revealed that there were only six doses of ZMapp available, and has been used.

The U.S envoy noted that the best solution was to contain the spread of the virus, which is exactly what??s being done in Nigeria. She disclosed that efforts were being made to record the same kind of success in Liberia.

Meanwhile, latest reports from the World Health Organisation (WHO) has revealed that no fewer than 1,900 people have now died from EVD outbreak in West Africa.

It would be recalled that the US President Barack Obama had earlier hinted that stopping the deadly virus won??t be easy, but could be achieved, although the U.S government had earlier turned down the Nigerian government??s request to help with ZMapp experimental drug on the ground that it was still too early to send it to Africa.
