What makes a weapon powerful? The word powerful can be very subjective in this case. Causing massive annihilation is powerful but so is inciting fear in a prolonged and painful manner. Anything that can destroy lives and properties is powerful, conversely anything that can protect lives and properties from these desttuctive weapons in history, is also equally powerful. There is no stopping of any country or institution from proving to the world how powerful they can be whether by destroying their enemy or protecting their own.

1.
A self powered machine gun that could fire 600 rounds per minute which is equivalent to the firepower of 30 contemporary bolt action rifles. It has mostly been associated with British conquests and was famously used when 700 British soldiers fought off 3,000 warriors with just four Maxim guns in the Battle of Shangani.

3. This engraved cannon is the largest howitzer ever made. It weighs 38 tonnes and is 5.34 meters long. Built in 1586, this massive weapon is now being displayed at the Kremlinn Moscow Russia.

4. The first war vehicle to be called a tank could carry 5 machine guns and 8 soldiers. Mark I had several upgrades numbered II to X but all bore the same resemblance to their “Mother”. This massive tank andits variants were used by several countries throughout the First World War.

5. This mean machine created by Rheinmetall for the Nazi war machine was the largest self-propelled weapon to be used in actual attacks during World WarII.

6. These two humongous World War II era German 80 cm railway siege guns are the largest caliber rifled weapons in history used in live combat and its shells are the heaviest of any ammunition ever.

7. The Ruchnoy Protivotankovyy Granatomyot or hand-held anti-tank grenade launcher or simply the RPG is the most widely used anti-armor weapon in the world. Used by both militaries and insurgent groups, RPG’s even the battlefield out against opponents with more heavy artillery.

8. A class of long range Iranian missiles that could potentially reach up to 5,000 km, Shahab missile upgrades are shrouded in secrecy but the assumption is that they would be used during a possible invasion by Israel.

9. 50 Calibre machine.
The 50 Caliber Machine Gun is a heavy machine gun designed towards the end of World War I byJohn Browning. It is very similar in design to Browning's earlier M1919 Browning machine gun, which was chambered for the.30-06 cartridge. The M2 uses the much larger and much more powerful.50 BMG cartridge, which was developed alongside and takes its name from the gun itself (BMG standing forBrowning Machine Gun). The M2 has been referred to as "Ma Deuce",as a GI phonetic slang or "the fifty" in reference to its caliber. The design has had many specific designations; the official designation for the current infantry type is Browning Machine Gun, Cal. .50, M2, HB, Flexible. It is effective against infantry, unarmored or lightly armored vehicles and boats, light fortifications and low-flying aircraft. The M2 machine gun has been in production longer than any other machine gun.The Browning .50 caliber machine gun has been used extensively as a vehicle weapon and for aircraft armament by theUnited Statesfrom the 1930s to the present.

Specifications:
Weight38 kg (83.78 lb)58 kg (127.87 lb) with tripod and T&E.
Length1,654 mm (65.1 in)
Barrel length1,143 mm (45.0 in).
Cartridge.50 BMG (12.7×99mm NATO)
Action Short recoil-operated.
Rate of fire 485–635 rounds/min (M2HB),750–850 rounds/min (AN/M2)1,200 rounds/min (AN/M3).
Muzzle velocity 2,910 ft/s (890 m/s) for M33 ball.
Effective firing range1,800 m (2,000 yd)
Maximum firing range 6,800 m (7,400 yd).

10. Chimera Virus.
As we just said, being able to destroy an entire city in less than a second with the push of a button is one way to measure destructive power, but being able to selectively and slowly decimate a population with disease and infection is so unconventionally brutal.

11. The Predator and Predator B (aka The Reaper).

Used by the United States, the Royal Air Force, and the Italian Air Force, these drones are becoming increasingly common for both combat and recon operations.

12. Nimitz Class Aircraft Carrier.
With twin nuclear reactors that don’t need refueling for 23 years and bays that are capable of holding up to 130 F/A-18 Hornets just the appearance of this carrier in any region is enough to influence global politics.

13. Tsar Bomba.
Remember those enormous mushroom cloud explosions in history books? Well those were caused by these guys. The Tsar Bomb had a mass of 27 tons and would create a fireball with a radius of 3.5 kilometers.

14. DF-31/31A – ICBM (China).
The Dong Feng 31 is a road-mobile and silo based series of ICBMs deployed by China since 2006. The original model of this missile carried a large 1 megaton warhead and had a range of 8,000 km. The missile’s CEP is reportedly 300m. The improved 31A has three 150kt warheads and is capable of landing those warheads on a target over 11,000km away with a reported CEP of around 150m. The added fact that these missiles can be moved around and fired from a mobile launch vehicle makes them worthy of being on this list.

15. RT-2UTTKh Topol-M – ICBM (Russia).

Known as the SS-27 by NATO, the Topol-M entered Russian service in 1997. The missile is based in silos and a small number are road-mobile. Currently the missile is armed with a single 800kt warhead but can be equipped with up to six warheads and decoys. With a top speed of 7.3km per second, a relatively flatflight trajectory and a CEP of around 200m,the Topol-M is a very effective nuclear missile which is difficult to stop once in flight. The added difficulty of tracking the mobile units only makes it a more effectiveweapons system to possess.

16. LGM-30G Minuteman III – ICBM (USA).
This is the only land-based ICBM deployedby the US. First deployed in 1970, the Minuteman III was supposed to be replaced by the MX Peacekeeper ICBM. That program was cancelled and the Pentagon, instead, put $7 billion into updating and upgrading the existing 450 Minutemen over the past decade. With a speed of nearly 8 km/s and CEP of under 200 m (the precise number is highly guarded) the old Minuteman remains a formidable nuclear weapon. Originally this missile carried three small yield warheads. Today, a single 300-475kt warhead from the cancelled MX program arms each missile.

17. Airborne laser.
Star Wars fans might like this one. You see, The Galactic Empire had the Death Star, and now the American Empire has the YAL-1A Airborne Laser.Where the Death Star was a moon sized space station with a planet destroying super laser, the YAL-1A is just a 747 with a really big laser mounted on the front.Designed to shoot down enemy ICBMs from hundreds of miles away, the YAL-1A is revolutionary in its ability to destroy a high speed moving target at amassive distance instantly.Picture this scenario. The YAL-1A is flying hundreds of miles away from the battlefield over friendly airspace. Troops on the ground call in an airstrike and radio GPS coordinates to the YAL-1A, which then immediately fires its laser delivering extremely precise killing power on target at the speed of light. No waiting, no warning.

18. B41 (Mk-41) - Most Powerful Nuclear Warhead Ever Developed by the United States.
The American-made B41, a thermonuclearweapon deployed by the US Air Command in the 1960s, was the most powerful nuclear warhead ever developed by the United States. Together with the EC17/Mk-17 and the EC24/Mk-24, they have a theoretical maximum yield of 25 megatons. The Mk-17 was also the largest by size and mass: about 20 short tons or 18,000 kg. B41 (Mk-41), a gravity bomb had a mass of 4800 kg, retired in 1957.B41, which was 3.76 m in length with a diameter of 1.32 m and a weight of 4,850 kg, was carried only by the B-52 Stratofortress and B-47 Stratojet.

19. Agni Missile.
The Agni-V is an intercontinental ballistic missile developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation(DRDO) of India, named after one of the five elements of nature.

20.We all are familiar with the Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombings that changed the course of history during the last World War. Named after film characters, thesetwo infamous nuclear bombs gave humanity a shocking memory of what warfare can do to a nation and its future generation.

Very informative thread..To create takes a lot more time than to destroy...
Where's the LockHeed AC 130 and the DR 50 sniper rifle, the F2000 machine gun and the F--22 Raptor jet ?
Oh I get it now ,the ones that have shaped History..

Too many incendiary, thermobaric and radioactive weaponry in your countdown...imo,the most potent weapon in the world should be biological. A cultured and weaponized air-borne virus without an antidote,100% mortality rate and a very short kill time will make the Permian-Triassic Extinction Event aka the Great Dying look like an outbreak of sorethroat....I was close to developing one in 1976....
