sad Cultism is perhaps one of the greatest problems confronting our tertiary institutions today in Nigeria. In recent years, this plague has assumed a frightening and deadly dimension. its spread to secondary (and even primary) schools in the country is enough to give every caring parent a cause to lose sleep. cry

The term "cult" has been defined somewhere as "a group of people engaged in a form of ritual usually under oath, binding the members to a common cause". Such group of individuals operate covertly in furtherance of their objective which is usually detrimental to the interest of others.

Infact, a cult is a group of people which places a secondary need in the position of a primary need. In other words, any group of people that places emphasis on secret initiation or rituals for the purpose of group-help, group protection but whose activities are clandestine in nature is a cult.

One major problem is the lack of proper moral education by the parents which contributes largely to the quality of products turned over to the universities by primary and secondary schools. Universities are for men and women of quality. It is an institute for learning and character.

Who or how can we stop this cultism plague

I wonder if that is really possible. I hate the activities of the cultists but i have since discovered that it may be difficult, if not impossible to eradicate it. Nevertheless, it can be reduced to the barest minimum. If the following are done

1. Eradicate or curtail the activities of all cults like the Ogboni fraternity, Armoc, etc This is necessary because we can not tell the children to stop it, when their parents indulge in it. There should be a law banning all of them.

2. Make it a law to be criminal for any lecturer to be a cultist. Any known cultist lecturer should be sacked

3. Treat cult members among students as armed robbers and assasins. The cultists use arms and they cause destruction, so they should be handled with very severe punishment. Anyone that kills should be killed and anyone that maims should be jailed. It is not sufficient to just rusticate them or expel them from the institutions. They should face the full brunt of the law.

4. There should be a very serious awareness programme talking about the ills of cultism and the punishment for it. The way HIV/AIDS campaign has been reinforced, is they way we need to tackle cultism. I am sure the originator of cultism is now regreting ever starting the idea because hoodlums have hijacked his intentions.

5. A high-powered espionage should be carried out on all campuses and government offices to flush cultists out. They meet on land, not in the air, some even announce their meetings. They should all be smoked out and made to face the law.

If we can be sincere about these proposals, cultism will be reduced to the barest minimum. It is seen as a statua symbol now, so some students are enticed with that but by the time we make it look as a plague, that it is, everyone will flee from it.

I seriously doubt that's possible, @ topic.

It starts much earlier than university level.

Its the culture in some areas, familial or a combination of both, in others.

why should cultism be banned?
one man's food is another man's poison - nigeria is a secular state so every religious belief is welcome as long as they don't commit crime while practising it.

Here are 10 reasons students join a cult group in schools: https://www.blueprint.ng/why-students-join-secret-in-schools/

Cultism is a problem for tertiary institutions in Southern Nigeria , please stop generalising . It's never tolerated in any university in northern Nigeria and it's never our problem up North. Just like Yahoo yahoo, ritualism, scam , drug peddling and unending dream of leaving abroad.

Periodic Awareness Campaign and detailed exposition on how they operate to students from primary schools to tertiary

We shouldn't overlook our children as minors.
My nine year old can tell you a thing or two about cultism already.
