The Federal Government on Tuesday said only three per cent of the 923,768 square miles of land in the country has been documented, titled and registered.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Pius Anyim, disclosed this in a keynote address at the South–East
Stakeholders’ Workshop on Land Reform in Enugu.
Represented by Senator Ben Ndu, Anyim expressed regrets at the development.
He added that as a result of the development, land resources in the country had not been put to optimal economic advantage.
Noting that appropriate titling and registration of parcels would enable holders to harness the wealth inherent in their land assets, Anyim expressed happiness that the pilot Systematic Land Titling and Registration projects, embarked upon by the Land Reform Committee in collaboration with Ondo and Kano State governments were yielding results.
He also commended the Department for International Development for supporting the projects in the states.
The SGF said, “The pilot projects have proved that land titling could be transparent and quick.
“The process of recording every parcel in the presence of adjoining owners is also expected to significantly reduce litigations.
“We are expecting that the first set of Certificates of Occupancy shall soon be rolled out from the pilot projects.
“The comprehensive inventory of land holdings across the country that would be generated from the ongoing titling projects shall also aid housing census and provide data for planing.”

Not only land use records. We are generally bad at documentation and keeping records in this country.

Is it now they are coming to their senses or maybe because of the prevalent nature of Land Scam artists and dubious Real Estate companies that specialize in defrauding prospective land purchasers.

It has to be so,when there's no regulation in the purchase,and sales of land.

The bottleneck in the registration of land also isn't helping matters. Why pay over 1million to have the governor's consent for a land you bought less than a million.

Land documentation is expensive.the amount the ministry demand is somewhat outragious..it also takes a long time before the titles to the land are out.reduce the fee and people will start documenting properly.

Its not enough to state that something isnt done.. but you need to profer solutions as well....

Simply state the steps which the ordinary Nigerian should take to get his/her land registered such that the land owner doesnt run into debt in the process of land registration.

Are they just realizing that now? They make land documentation difficult thereby denying many the possibility of using their land as a collateral to raise funds that could help accelerate their business undertakings!

We all know.Because due to corruption...most new land owners would pay through their noses and go through hell before acquring legit land papers of ownernership.

Thank Goodness my land is one of the few lands that doesn't lack documentation, title and registration
